Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Topic of Grant Xebec : Cape Town has had some hectic days with a Taxi strike. Violence and intimidation been rather hectic. I have 1000 staff which we have had to get to various sites around Cape Town some 24/7, and my team have been amazing. We have had 3 vehicle stoned and 4 of my staff where beaten up- SA is beautiful but has an ugly side to it  .

I took my ops team and admin for a kayak as we have had some beautiful weather just to thank them for their incredible work and dedication over this time : some pics :

Just the other week I read some rather disturbing facts about the current political climate in SA, where at least one political leader calls for killing "de boer".
This highly unsettled me. Your post on strikes and associated violence doesn't put me at ease.
Wish you all good luck. Good thing you could provide some R&R to your staff.

Hi Grant. First off, those 3D decorations look the part and are instrumental in Grant's Xebec's look. You are really getting the hang of this 3D printer it seems. I am so sorry to hear about the taxi strike - it seems that just when one thinks that a step forward has been taken, we go three steps back. Eish!

About the last two pictures - especially the last one: WOW! That looks incredible; I am so jealous!
Good morning Heinrich. It was a perfect Cape Town day…needed to get my guys to chill a little. The taxi mafia is causing a lot of kak.
That is looking very nice, Grant. With lovely details.
Regard, Peter
Good morning. Thank you Kindly Peter. Robben Island is way off- would be about a 4hr paddle and I’m not sure my staff would have made it ;). Was beautiful tho. Cheers Grant
Wow, those kayak photos are great. Looks like a lot of fun.

How do you go about the the 3D printing. Is it complicated?
Good morning Jan. It was. The actual printing is very simple once you have the settings and software set up correctly. It takes a while tho, like 3hrs. The only major consideration is no sunlight, good ventilation and a temp above 17•.
The difficult part is preparing the STL file for print. I’m not even going to start about designing your own STL file as this is rather complex and requires specific design software. (I’m not there yet).
You load an STL file into splicer software where you set the print level, speed, rotation, build supports etc etc. What you use depends on the resin density, your type of printer and the actual shape and design of the part. If you get one thing wrong the print fails.

An example of preparing the supports (the gold things).
You also need to insert holes at various places for the resin to drain and cure.
Once you have printed the parts you then need to wash with Alcohol (not whiskeyROTF) and cure under a UV light. You can buy a washer and curing machine but I’m doing it the old fashioned way.
There are plenty of you tube videos with way better explanations than this brief summary.
Love the look of that deck, oars, ladders, …… well all of it Grant. You have some clever ideas and solutions. Except tossing crew down the stairs ROTF.
Good morning Roger. Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate your visits to my Cazador.
Ahhh! I only see the Cape Town Stadium. While in CT for the Argus and when no-one was looking I jumped over the pitch barrier and kissed the Hallowed ground upon which the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup was played. It was like kissing the feet of the greatest religion on earth. BTW Grant nice photos, very envious and great build on the model.
Good morning. Those were good times in SA. Thank you for the compliment.
Magnificent pictures Grant, thanks for sharing. The water in the bay does look incredibly calm. Sorry to hear that some of your staff became casualties of the violence. Eish, what can you say, the glory of nature marred by humanity. Hopefully the strike is at an end and life can resume some form of normality again.
Good morning Mark. True story. Nope we woke to another day of kak. My staff have done such a good job. E.g. one of my staff, from Langa, walk 2 hrs to his site this morning- woke up at 4am. This is through areas of intimidation and violence, another was held at gunpoint and told to go home, she just walk around the corner and still got to site, etc etc….the stuff legends are made of. I have so many stories like this to tell. Interesting times- costing my business a fortune each day thoo_O.
Cheers Grant
I love the photos!! it is an excellent perspective!!!
Thank you Jim.

Good morning Johan. That is good old Julius…a militant communist whose rhetoric is worse than his bite…well at the moment. Sadly farm murders are on the increase again and this kak from Julius doesn’t help. He is being taken to court for hate speech but he just doesn’t care. An interesting place SA.
Cheers Grant

This is fascinating information on the 3D printing, Grant. Quite clearly it is fast becoming an integrated part of model building - I think it is great that you are learning and mastering this facet too.

As to the political situation in SA - I was actually quite impressed at the current state of Cape Town during my visit (Gauteng is obviously shambles), so it is not good to hear that this type of anarchy is also rearing its ugly head in the Mother City.

Good morning Heinrich. As with Model ship building my 3D printing status is at rookie level. I tried to print a figurine just to use as a scale reference and he ended up with no legs and a hole in his cloakROTF. I’m still not getting the basics right with this

The good news is the taxi strike is over. Been hectic 7 days.

Good morning. The second set of oars have finally been done. I thought I would just send some pics of the whole ship so far:

Cheers Grant- PS excuse the screw tiller. I always forget to align the rudder before taking photos. I’m tempted to fix this and not have it working.
Looking quite magnificent Grant. cheers Beer

Beautiful photographs showing off her sleek lines. The oars look magnificent, Grant - you are on a very good way with her.
Not only do I like your build photos but the Admiral has a Thumbsup for you.

Jan
Good afternoon. Thanks Guys. I appreciate your compliments.
Deck is filling in nicely! Are the oars a bit oversized or is it the perspective of the photo? Either way they are a wonderful addition!
Good morning. Paul. I thought so too. It is the reason why I attempted to make a scale figurine (3D) as they seemed bulky. I made them according to the kit specs other than making them a little longer. I fitted one into the oar port and they could not be that short. Luckily I made my deck longer. I have noticed most of the kit fittings to be too bulky in relation to the ship itself. Anyway they are just in a pile so I’m running with this. Cheers Grant

Loving your work Grant, beautiful craftsmanship and it looks so good.

Makes perfect sense to me...
Good morning Paul. That I doubt. ROTF Knowing you and your quality you would have made these from scratch to the perfect scale from boxwood and sanded each oar for 8 hours with 80grit resulting in a masterpiece:D. I got lazy with these oars, gave up with the kit metal parts being oversized and and just went for it. The Admiral also thinks they are a “bit big” - so maybe one day if I get the motivation some 3mm dowels will be bought and I will make some handles and supports and redo these however not this day…….hmmmm. Cheers Grant

Good morning. I worked on some more gun port lids- little hinges, in haul lines and am getting the PS nearly done.

I tie off the in haul line (0.4mm) to the bulwark strake with a half hitch.

Here are some pics of the PS with the gun port lids - nearly done: (I thought she deserved some nice pics for a change so she made a trip to the dinning room:
