Grants Xebec 1:60 (using Jabeque Cazador Occre1:60 kit) [COMPLETED BUILD]

Good morning. I worked on some more gun port lids- little hinges, in haul lines and am getting the PS nearly done.

I tie off the in haul line (0.4mm) to the bulwark strake with a half hitch.

Here are some pics of the PS with the gun port lids - nearly done: (I thought she deserved some nice pics for a change so she made a trip to the dinning room:

Beautiful model and workmanship. Question. Are those Whiskey, Brandy or Cognac on the sideboard?

That is one fine looking ship Grant!
Good morning. Thank you kind sir.
A fitting place for sure. The dining room. :)
Now that is a destination fit for a queen. Is this the first step aimed at making Arlene used to the idea of the Xebec on the dining room table?
Good morning Ron and Heinrich. Ha, the Admiral will send this back to the Shipyard so quickly. She is getting used to the Victory in the lounge tho, I even saw her showing her friend the other day:D

Another question: why are they still full? :)
That was going to be my next Question ;)
Good morning Guys. Good spotting. These are port which had been lying in my cellar for ages. The other night we had a family dinner and decided to see if they were still drinkable….2 out of 3. The one tasted like a bad day in the shipyardROTF
I really like the color combination you have going on! Great stuff! ;)
Thank you Dean.
Cheers Grant

Good morning Johan. That is good old Julius…a militant communist whose rhetoric is worse than his bite…well at the moment. Sadly farm murders are on the increase again and this kak from Julius doesn’t help. He is being taken to court for hate speech but he just doesn’t care. An interesting place SA.
Cheers Grant
The issue being that too much idiots are sprouting nonsense like this and most of the times it goes unchecked.
Adding to misery is the probability of their followers being not too smart either and willing to do their biding and "de lont is in het kruitvat" (the fuse is in the powder keg).

Putting this aside, I went through your latest photoshoot and boy, does she look good. You spectacularly succeeded to highlight her features by using contrasting woods and colors. Once all parts have been added and the last brush stroke has dried she definitely deserves a place of honor.
Having said that, my Admiral, like Arlene, only condones so much, so once my BN is finished I am allowed to have her in the living, only if I relocate the other BN to the upstairs, which actually does make sense.
My point being that it's either the Victory or the Xebec...

Good morning Johan. I hear you, there are too many Julius’s all over the world. Thanks for the compliment and once Justin’s furniture is out my pub/shipyard both my Victory and Xebec will be relegated to here as their final resting place. Cheers Grant

Good morning:
Grants cannons : As mentioned previously I am scratch building all my cannons. I don’t have much wood left so I have build the carriage up from 3 - 2x2 birch wood strips cut to different lengths. The wheels are cut from a 4mm dowel and the axles from a 1x2mm birch. I have nailed the wheel with 0.3mm wire. A sort of MacGyver type build.

They are stained with oak and I don’t want them all perfect so I make the stain a little irregular and “used”.
Rigging will be Dutch/French continental :

At this scale I did not attempt to include the hooks etc as these would be like 1mm and I could not make these so small….I would have if I could. Also if these are made there is little room between the outhaul and inhaul blocks and was just too crowed for me.
Brass fittings : I know many of you have a distain for brass fittings on a ship however from the start I decided to finish my Xebec with brass throughout. I also left the nails brass for the Trunion capsquare bolts - They just look cool:D.
Rigging: I rig each cannon on the ship and place a piece of paper under it so not to scratch the deck- “no finesse Grant”.

Result: I think the 3mm blocks are a little large….I am running with this as I have no 2.5mm blocks or rope. The breech ropes are 1mm and the length is determined by ensuring the cannon goes back enough for reload. All the rope lengths are done this way. Unfortunately this mean the breech ropes don’t have enough room on the deck between the cannon so I’m not sure what OcCre was thinking, and they overlap each other…..thinking about this problem…..

The angle of each cannon will be determined by the quoin and will all be included once I have rigged all the cannon so I achieve uniformity………ha so my logic tells me….ROTF. I will glue the cannon to the Quoin so they stay straight and uniform.

Cheers Grant

Hi my friend. I just love how you are incorporating more and more scratch-build aspects into your build. It is not only a clear sign of a modeler gaining in confidence but also in craftsmanship. It's a pity about you not having the 2.5mm blocks, but hey, we have to make do with what we have and that you are doing admirably!

These guns and tackles are looking very good - and correct.
The only thing, what I would do in principle: blackening of the eyebolts and rings, and the nail heads of the trunnion caps maybe
- but I have a principle problem, because I do not like the look of brass - but like everywhere in our hobby - just a question of taste

Now a dedicated modeller would sand and shape each block individually to it's correct size. ROTF
Loving your work Grant.
