Wow, you’re planking looks great.
I catch up here. Your planking is superb
Good morning. Thank you very much Guys. She will sand into a real beauty Grant.
Good morning Jack. Thank you. I am extremely happy with my shape. So many things have been based on the Le Requin drawings so far. The more aggressive curve at the bow is my the main difference. I do need to get a more Arabian feel as I progress- she’s looking a bit “Frenchy” at present. Sorry @GilbertmStarting to look really good Grant, I like the sweep of the stern. Your modifications are working very well. The adage ; 'If it looks right, it is right', comes to mind.
Super job. Cheers JJ..
Good morning Bill. Thank you. I use Wood glue with CA as “nails”. I put a tiny dot of CA gel glue every 40mm or so (Planks are cut to 200mm on my ship other than at the bow and stern where they clearly vary) in between the wood glue and also on the two ends. Smooth it with a toothpick careful not to get any on the outer side of the plank(CA stains). Must not mix with the wood glue. It does mean you have to lay the plank quickly with little time for placement- 45secs or so. I take a while ensuring it dry fits well before applying the glue. Once on I smooth is down firmly with a wet cloth as the wood glue tends to lay thicker than the CA dots. All happens rather quickly.Hello Grant,
Your planking work turned out great. What did you use to glue the second planks down? I know Occre says to use contact cement.
Bill
Thanks Paul.Wonderful job on the veneer planking Grant! And the new lines look.... (you know).
Good morning Brian. Thank you. I have been checking your Le Requin out at times. Beautiful. I think the POF Le Requin is one of the most beautiful kits out there. I love your cannon barrel details.Did those come with the kit? Cheers Grant
I now see why you enjoy this ship; she sure has beautiful hull lines, at the same time, I don't see why you would need the stern extension...Good morning. Port side planking progress raw and no sanding.

While looking through the kit decorations (most of which I will not use) I saw these flowers and decided to use them for gun port lids on the stern. (Stuck on with prestick)I sprayed them matt black and then painted them old brass metallic. I like the look.

Thanks Johan….she would not be a xebec without it. Cheers GrantI now see why you enjoy this ship; she sure has beautiful hull lines, at the same time, I don't see why you would need the stern extension...
Good morning. Thank you very much. Cheers GrantWow, i had to catch up a few weeks, this was a lot of reading.
I have to say, you are making a beauty of this Xebec Grant, your deck, and hull planking look superb, not to speak of the hull lines, excellent work you are showing
Hi Grant. Again a nice personal touch. Yes, a lot of repetitive work. But luckily 'only' 20......Good morning. Ricochet Rabbit at it again…I am still trying to get a dummy cannon looking ok…..
The cannons on these types of Xebecs were a 8 pounder short gun with very low carriage. Display cannon at the Musee national de La marine in Paris.

I also liked this cannon shape as the front and rear wheels are the same size. Lazy Grant..Brian’s post earlier of his beautifully build Xebec also shows a similar shaped carriage and I like the breech line going through the cannon.

Ok so I made my first carriage. One of the axles broke so I will put this cannon under the cover from the stern deck.

I still need to add the stroop bed and quoin. The breech line will also be move further back. The transom at the front is too far forward and not angled but I’m not changing this process as I can’t get consistency here.
I am going to leave all the fittings brass from start to finish on Grants Xebec…hmmmm…..I know I’m going to get some chirps here.
I may just poly these cannons and leave them their natural colour (Birch- only wood I get easily here) vs the oak stain. Will decide after made all of them and see how they look on the ship.
19 to goand back to trimming, sanding and tree nailing the hull and bulkwarks.
Cheers Grant
Grant, the eyelet is the only thing that looks out of scale, otherwise it looks great.Good morning. Ricochet Rabbit at it again…I am still trying to get a dummy cannon looking ok…..

Hello Daniel. I agree. It is the smallest I got and a little big. I have not glued these in and am in debate wether to make a whole lot as I did for my Victory. They are really small - Cannon only 20mm long. Hmmmm…..Cheers GrantGrant, the eyelet is the only thing that looks out of scale, otherwise it looks great.
Hello Peter. My approach to building a ship is to have 3 or 4 repetitive items and when I’m tired of sanding trimming and tree nailing the hull I make one or two of these- at moment I have cannons and gunport lids. Done one of eachHi Grant. Again a nice personal touch. Yes, a lot of repetitive work. But luckily 'only' 20......

Good evening Paul. We can get everything here if we are willing to pay for it. You have to buy on line and use private logistic companies for deliver E.g. if I buy 200 dollars worth of rope and blocks it will cost 200+90 ( delivery)+ 80 import tax. And of course covert the exchange rate of 18 at present. If we use SA postal we save the 90 but it takes 6 months or never to get it. I ordered my Victory 3D main entrance in January ….still waiting. There are no hobby stores etc which stock much here and the big supply chains generally do not have what we need. Every once in a while you find stuff you can use.Hi Grant. Serious question: what's the deal with getting materials and supplies to South Africa? It's not like you're on the moon... Is it just logistics, or the government, or???
One time you mentioned power/electricity rationing. What's going on down there?
This is still a beautiful and incredible country. It is a very special place to live in- unique and very rewarding. I would not trade it for any other place. I’m not one to criticise but rather get going and contribute to a solution to the challenges we face….and there are many. As for ship building…. It is a hobby and I think in a twisted way, I enjoy using what I have and somehow, in a uniquely SA way, making it work.Good evening Paul. We can get everything here if we are willing to pay for it. Most Government institutions have pretty much failed. Our electricity supplier (Eskom) cannot meet demand and the grid is close to collapse. Mainly due to mismanagement and corruption. We have 4 to 6 hours a day power cuts. It’s not all doom and gloom however. Private businesses are very resilient and creative. This holds our economy together. Still plenty opportunity and economic value to be found and capitalised.
Good evening Jan. Ok, ok you guys are convincing meView attachment 367923
I don’t know if you have one of these. I found it in the jewelry making sections of one of our local craft stores. With patience (of which I have very little) I was able to make very small eyelets.
