very very nice job indeed rob !!
daguerretypes were around in 1853 ?
Have you decided to build her?i specified 1853 because as you know there were only a few months to get a pic of original GR !!
Thanks Rob for the build photos. Nice work!
Dan
well rob i have an unfinished GR at 1/4 inch scale- just a planked hull- was 1st scratch build plank on bulkhead- did it just to learn some ropes- it wasnt good so never finished it and never will- soon i will start on a new 1/48 clipper- havent decided which one yet but GR is one of the ones under considerationHave you decided to build her?
I found this rendering of the Great Republic...and I'm firmly believing this is the most accurate depiction of her as she was built originally, I have ever found.
Her sail area was enormous....
She must have been a real site to see and magnificently emotional as well.

i just now noticed the main skysail yard !
yeah- like i said the hull is made- its about 7 ftYes...though first hand accounts claim she had no such skysail on the main mast....the concrete info on the subject is still left up to personal interpretation. Her weather deck and deck furniture seams accurate as well as her spanker mast location to the mizzen. Her main yard is enormous as it was. She was so beautiful.
1/48 is quite large and if you were to make the GR in this scale it will be quite large.......
I'm waiting in anticipation for what you decide.

i would guess 1/72 scaleI hate to say this...but without pictures...*it didn't happen*...Heehee.
I'd love to see some pics if you have them....7 ft? Man. How exciting.
I found this image many years ago. I don't know who the gentleman is, but this is his large version of the GR set in a watery diorama.

I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN YOUR GREAT REPUBLIC PLANS IF YOU HAVE THEM TO PURCHASE.I AM RESTORING A GREAT MODEL OF SHIP. IT MUST BE ABOUT 100 YEARS OLD AND 8 FEET LONG. THE RIGGING ON IT IS GREAT AND MOSTLY INTACT. PLEASE RESPOND GEORGEI'm entering this log long after I have laid the keel....and am entering the sail install. I do apologize.
I will refer back to other build aspects as I progress.
This last week I set the mizzen mast. This build has taken me down another math of construction I have never traveled. I rigged each mast with yards and sails to the upper topsail...leaving off the lower topsail and main course to afford easier access to rig the main shrouds and ratlines.
I have much to do, but here is the state she is currently in.
And an image of a painting she will represent.
