HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Oh my, i missed a few days, and friend Heinrich is already back in his country again.

Welcome home my friend, and have fun during the remains of your school holiday.

With greetings from Peter and Marijke, for you and of course Admiral Anna

Thank you.

Given the year when Hamel stranded and given the number of sailors on his ship (64) his Jacht was most likely already a bigger ship, so not exactly like the ship from Barentsz or the Halve Maen. I can imagine his ship was more the type of a pinas. The names "jacht" and "pinas" where often used for the same types of ships, and it was mostly the size which made a ship more a pinas then a Jacht.

The pinas is one of the models which is on the "to do" list, so....
Absolutely right Hans. The names jacht and pinas were often interchanged. Now that you have mentioned it, yes, I am referring to Hendrik Hamel's ship, De Sperwer. With the Witsen 3D interactive online experience and Witsen's book/s, there is probably more information available on the pinas than any other Dutch ship-type and at least I do not have to go searching for the name of the ship I am building. ROTF Add in Hamel's incredible story of how he discovered Korea and that model should be winner in 1:50 scale!

My dearest Peter. Thank you so much for the kind words and well wishes. I hurried back to Anna and the WB. :D Even though I was not actively building, the WB is less than half a meter away from me and is constantly on my mind. Please send my regards to Marijke my friend.

Dear Friend

Not a particularly great day today. Anna's father has heard that he needs to go in for a hip replacement. Tomorrow, final examinations will be completed and a date scheduled. It is quite possible that he might go into surgery still this weekend.

In any case, I dusted off the WB's plans and this is what is on the schedule:

Main mast.png
Main mast yard and main mast topsail yard.

Fokkemast.png
Foremast yard and foremast topsail yard.

Crossjack.png
Crossjack.

As a warm-up, I completed the two anchors. Apologies for the quality of this pic - I really don't know why it is so blurry.

Hello Dear Friends. I am back in China after a mammoth return flight to Shanghai via Dubai. It's now half past one in the morning and my disrupted sleeping pattern means, that I am wide awake now. ROTF
Glad to hear that your holiday went well Heinrich and that you arrived safely back home again. So good that you had the chance to catch up with Grant and fam, the kind of opportunities brought about by this forum. Looking forward to your onward ship-building progress :)

Hi Mark. For sure the chance to meet up with Grant was something special and is something that I will always cherish. I agree with you on the opportunities that SOS present - to think that we have been "forum friends" for yonks', and finally get a chance to meet each other, is just beyond one's imagination. On top of that, the fact that all of us share a common interest, is just a further bonus!

Wishing all the best with the examinations, and hoping replacements can be avoided with medicine treatment.
Thank you very much for the kind words, Jimsky. I am holding thumbs on this side!

Hello Heinrich
Prayers for a successful outcome for Anna's father and support for Anna and you.

Are the yards for the WB pre tapered and tipped?
Thank you very much for the kind words, Daniel - I will convey them to Anna.

As to the yards, no pre tapering or pre tips. Therefore, this is one of my less favorite things to do as I do not have a lathe. I will have to rely on sandpaper and my drill.

Have fun with the yards Heinrich, and hopefully Anna"s fathers hip replacement wil be succesful, wish him well my friend
Thank you my friend. I will most certainly give Anna your message.

I will start work on the yards tomorrow and will take things nice and easy. I am in no particular rush to finish the WB as I have no new project waiting for me.

Dear Friends

PIET SANDERS (aka pietsan)

It is always a sad day when one has to say goodbye to someone who has had a profound impact on you. To me though, it is even more difficult when that person is my mentor and modelbuilding example, @pietsan Piet Sanders.

Those of you may not be aware of it, Piet was the very reason why I started the whole Willem Barentsz project. His incredible model of the WB made me want to build my own WB and served as my motivation throughout this mammoth project. At times when I thought that I had bit off more than I could chew, a quick look at his work, served as my inspiration to carry on.

For some time now, Piet has struggled with his health (lungs, heart and back) and even though he resumed his modelbuilding sporadically, badly worn spinal discs and vertebrae in his back have finally become such an impediment that it is no longer something that he could continue with. Selecting a favorite among all of Piet's splendid builds is a well-nigh impossible task. I know that his favorite model was in all likelihood his Royal Caroline, but to me, it will always be his WB.

As a parting shot, I leave you with the last ship model that he is busy completing on modelbouwforum.nl - the HMS Beagle which he is building for a friend.

Thank you, my friend for everything you have meant to me (and still do). My best wishes go with you in your future endeavors.

OMG. Heinrich that is so sad to hear. Quite often I refer to his bulid logs for inspiration. In fact I have recently revisited my Statenjacht build and his build is the best. My screen picture on my computer is his model.
He will be missed by all.
Very sad, indeed, Ron.

Dear Dean - I rate your work as some of the very best on SOS, and apart from that, we are friends! Of course, I am going to check up on you! :)
Good morning Heinrich. We all need to keep an eye on Dean @Dean62, not only for his craft but to ensure he doesn’t build too many Lego castles, planes, cars or puzzles …..and keeps entertaining us with his NL. Oh I forgot swimming pool and playing with his guitar…..;) . Cheers Grant
