Not a particularly great day today. Anna's father has heard that he needs to go in for a hip replacement. Tomorrow, final examinations will be completed and a date scheduled. It is quite possible that he might go into surgery still this weekend.

PIET SANDERS (aka pietsan)
It is always a sad day when one has to say goodbye to someone who has had a profound impact on you. To me though, it is even more difficult when that person is my mentor and modelbuilding example, @pietsan Piet Sanders.
Those of you may not be aware of it, Piet was the very reason why I started the whole Willem Barentsz project. His incredible model of the WB made me want to build my own WB and served as my motivation throughout this mammoth project. At times when I thought that I had bit off more than I could chew, a quick look at his work, served as my inspiration to carry on.
Piet worstelt al geruime tijd met zijn gezondheid (longen, hart en rug) en hoewel hij zijn modelbouw sporadisch hervatte, zijn slecht versleten tussenwervels en wervels in zijn rug uiteindelijk zo'n belemmering geworden dat het niet meer iets is waar hij mee door kan gaan. Het selecteren van een favoriet uit alle prachtige bouwwerken van Piet is een bijna onmogelijke taak. Ik weet dat zijn favoriete model naar alle waarschijnlijkheid zijn Royal Caroline was, maar voor mij zal het altijd zijn WB blijven.
Als afscheidsschot laat ik je achter met het laatste scheepsmodel dat hij aan het voltooien is op modelbouwforum.nl - de HMS Beagle die hij voor een vriend bouwt.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense, because it's a true artistic hallmark - and an artist, Dean most certainly is!Good morning Heinrich. I have a drawing to do of my granddaughter Zuleya, who is my favorite. One thing about pursuing many interests, is that I never get bored. But that is not why I do it, I just have too many interests and not enough time!
I will resume the NL soon!
Ps - it is sad news indeed about Piet. I wish him the very best and hope he can maintain a quality of life that is rewarding without modeling.
Also my prayers are with Anna’s father and I hope he has a positive outcome.
There is nothing wrong with using a drill, sandpaper and your hand by shaping the yards. Yours are looking very nice, Heinrich.Dear Friends
Further to the running rigging and sails of the WB, my first port of call was the yards. Without a lathe or plane and with only an electric drill and sandpaper to do the job, this is an exercise in patience. I deviated from the Kolderstok plans in one aspect - rather I chose to follow Ab Hoving's interpretation by omitting the center clamps found on the Main mast and main mast topsail yards as well as those on the Foremast and foremast topsail yards. The baginjera or crossjack does not require a clamp.
So far, I have finished (sans blocks) the Crossjack the Main Mast Yard, and the Main Mast Topsail yards. This is the same order in which they appear on the picture below.

I had a meeting with the Singaporean management of the school on Monday and in addition to heading the English Department for Middle and High School, I will now also be head of the Primary and Kindergarten sections! It's good on the one hand but bad for model building and kayaking on the other.What a delight to see you back at the worktable!
Good question, Paul. That comes with a firm commitment from the school to try their utmost to secure that; yes.And that came with a five year visa extension, right?

You know the funny thing is that after reading @Maarten Maarten's brilliant log on his scratch-built Fluyt, the one thing that has just been made blatantly clear again, is that these ships were not built to any means of perfection. There is no such thing as symmetry in the hull planking and planks were used ad hoc as and when available. Given that as backdrop, I am happy with how the yards look so far.Hello Heinrich, I agree with Peter @Peter Voogt, your hand-built yards look realistic as they would if making full scale yards by hand.
It sounds like your plate is filling up with all your new positions with the education department. Congratulations I know they think very highly of you to place so much responsibility with you.
