HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Currently it is the Chinese Labour Day Holidays, and I had a blissful work-free weekend which even includes tomorrow as well. With nothing specific in mind, I was browsing SOS, revisiting all my information that I had accumulated during my WB journey and so forth when I stumbled upon this painting by Hendrik Corneliszoon Vroom entitled "Een Zeeschip vaart een binnenwater op."(A seagoing vessel on an inland estuary).

Focusing on the ship on the right, reveals a brilliant depiction of a vlieboot - brilliant because this is exactly how I envisioned a vlieboot would look according to the research I had done. Seeing this painting prompted a very dangerous thing - I started thinking ... ROTF

The famous Henry Hudson's Halve Maen is described in resources as either a "jacht" or a "vlieboot". I would say that the two ship types are probably divided equally in their respective number of mentions. Why do I reference the Halve Maen in particular? Well, believe it or not, but contained in the hull of the Halve Maen is the ship depicted in the above painting.

@Kolderstok's Halve Maen

An added bonus of the Kolderstok model is that it was developed according to the research, findings and drawings of F. Baay an ex-curator of the maritime division of the Rijksmuseum many many moons ago. This means that for once we have a model that is developed unencumbered by the influences and interpretations of messrs, Witsen, Hoving and Emke - which is a real breath of fresh air.

So, why am I interested in a vlieboot? Well, for two reasons: The ship De Zwane which was part of the Dutch expeditions to the North in 1594/5 was a vlieboot and is the ship about which I have the most information. Secondly, I have an unused item which has been kept in safe storage since I received it and which is begging to adorn the stern of a ship.

Please note that I am just sharing a thought - the admiral is not keen on any "ship-talk", money is tight, and available time remains at a premium.

Heinrich, I think i also missed your birthday, soooo. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! And if I didn't, please don't say it ... (you understand why :-) ).

On another topic, when I opened your posting (I was looking "New Postings" at SOS menu bar) I almost passed away when I read POSTING # 6867 and 344 pages ...... WOW. My left over years of life wouldn't be enough to read your log .... HAHAHA. Fortunately, from time to time I was following this build, until it went out of my radar, so I have seen your great build of this model.

How many hundred of pages do I have to go back to catch up ??? ..... HAHAHA HAHAHA

All the best... your friend
Daniel

My Dear Friends

Those of you who have been following my build will know that I have tried my utmost to locate the bestekken (build instructions and dimensions) of the Zeeland Vlieboot, De Zwane. At the time I was in contact with Michiel van Wijngaarden of the Zeeuwse Archief who went out of his way to assist me. Unfortunately, he was unable to find the bestekken and concluded that it was in all likelihood destroyed in the bombing of Middelburg during the Second World War.

Never one to give up, I contacted Mr. van Wijngaard last week again (after four years) to ask him if he could have another look.

And today, I received the following mail:

Dear Mr Cornelissen,

Four years ago we indeed had some correspondence about the vlieboot De Swane. Among other things we talked about the ’twee bestekboekjes’ that were mentioned in the ’Werken uitgegeven door de Linschoten Vereeniging VIII, Page ---. We couldn’t find these ’bestekboekjes’. With the help of a colleague we searched through the ’----’ in the archive of the “---- van Zeeland”, (accesscode ----). After some extensive searching we found ---- ‘besteck ende voorwaerden om naer te maecken eenen vlieboot tot dienste van de ghemeene saecken’ in -----. The first ‘besteck’ starts on ----, and the last on ------. We believe that one of these must have been used for building ’De Swane’!

Namens het informatiecentrum van het Zeeuws Archief,

Met vriendelijke groet, / Kind regards,

Michiel van Wijngaarden

medewerker Infocentrum

After that it took me 10 minutes of checking the specifications, dates, shipwright and shipyard to conclude that Bestek #2 was - without any shadow of a doubt - De Zwane,

To say that I am speechless is probably the understatement of the year! Thank you Michiel!

That’s very nice news, Heinrich.
Persistence pays off / De Aanhouder Wint.
