HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Well, since you asked I’m not a fan of stains. (Unless the wood is crappy) Your wood is definitely not crappy.
In my woodworking projects with good grained hardwoods I prefer a clear finish as it brings out the gain of the wood and highlights the contrast between the various species of wood.
Not saying yours doesn’t look very good I’m just not a fan of staining.
Thank you very much for the comment, Ron! I did ask and I do like straight shooters, so no problem! :) I am not a fan of staining either! The issue that I had was that in real conditions (no cameras involved), the oak was simply too light in color to have an authentic historic look to it. The walnut, which is much darker, doesn't present that problem - hence I have left WB #1 untouched. In my book, I had to give the oak a darker finish, but not so dark that there would be no discernible difference between the oak and the walnut. Hence, I opted for the Medium Oak stain.

These are actually the best two best pictures in the sense that they are the closest to what it looks like in natural light. I have tilted the hull so that the light catches the full side of the ship.

I can imaging why you took some new pictures! This 2 pictures shows her on her best, Heinrich. It’s so much depending on how the light flows over the wood.
With this showing: Well done!
Regards, Peter

Thank you, Peter. The one thing that I learned very quickly is that this hull finish wants light to really come into its own. I am honest when I say that I am still in the process of coming to grips with it. It is very different and unlike any other finish I have ever seen before. It is really a golden, honey color.

Absolutely stunning Heinrich! She has a warm honey looking hue that is irresistible! White paint on the hull, that would be an incredibly difficult decision for me.
Thank you so much, my friend! With this build, by its very nature of incorporating various scratch-built elements, I have decided to be daring. I know I am going to say something funny now, but WB#1 I built for the aesthetic aspect - this one is there for accuracy - no compromises - "Persequi Veritatem"/"Pursue the Truth". Make no mistake, I was tempted, very tempted to leave it as it is, but I have already made the bold step and the first coat of white has already been applied. Bear in mind that there is still a LOT of oak that will go above the wales as I go skywards with the canopies and the stern, so there will be plenty of opportunity for the oak still to shine.

I sure do respect and admire your goal of authenticity for this version of the WB. Wow I am so looking forward to seeing how she turns out.
The first coat obviously looks like a little like the dog's bollocks but has actually surprised me. I have ordered what is apparently a very good, water-based base coat and have applied it very thinly.

Unfortunately, the light is terrible, but it does give you guys some idea. I am really happy with my planking though - there will be no sanding needed whatsoever.

I think that the CLOU performed a miracle on a hull that was already superb. I love the way it looks now.
As fot the Admiral, perhaps the Japanese restaurant can change het ideas about your painting???
Thank you for the very kind words my friend. I think the only thing that will change her mind is to get the painted part to look just as good as the rest of the hull. :)
