HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Good morning. This must be a very rewarding activity Heinrich. Cheers Grant
To me it is Grant, and it is a great way of socializing and making new friends as well - thoroughly enjoying myself! But then you know all about this with the mountain biking and enduro racing. Seems us South Africans can't sit still and just build models! ROTF

I do not know when last I struggled like this to get something simple done.

Effort #3 in tatters.

And with another school closure and total lockdown looming because of Covid (which puts my weekend kayaking at risk), the mood is not so great in the shipyard tonight.

Good evening Heinrich. Sorry my friend. (So South African). It’s time like these when we wish for those mini power saws etc. #4…holding thumbs. I think it is time for a smoke and some Nescafé ;) Cheers Grant

Hi Heinrich,

Sorry to hear your kayaking may be under threat and that another school has closed, take care over there.

Cheers,
Stephen.

That is exactly what I did, Grant. I walked away and did both of your suggestions! Now this morning, the ship and I are glaring at each other.

For as far as the WB goes, Grant took the words out of my fingers, and for all the rest (covid) sit and relax, you can't do anything about it
Hello my friend. Like I said to Grant, I followed the suggestions. The Covid business, however, means we are teaching online and to arrange all the links and prepare PPTs for the lessons is a lot of extra work. Hopefully, it will only be for a short time.

Cheers,

Hello Stephen. Hopefully, if there are not anymore cases reported, we will be back at school on Monday, but making Covid predictions is a lottery all in itself.

How do you cut an arch like that without power tools and with an X-Acto knife?

微信图片_20221020211930.jpg
You can do it actually quite easy, provided that the wood allows for it. With oak it is simply impossible - with Unicorn Models' s pear wood, it becomes feasible. Raiding my scrapbox, (thanks for the tip, Grant @GrantTyler) I found that I had some wood left from the sampan. Quite simply, the wood used by Unicorn is phenomenal - easily the best of any kit manufacturer that I have worked with. Makes me think ...

Hmm. How about wrapping a bit of sandpaper around a dowel and sanding the arch rather than cutting it??? Or maybe an arched file?

Hi Paul. Sorry, I expressed myself poorly - very bad for an English teacher? I have already cut it - the pic is my effort! But it was more of a rhetorical question to illustrate how much easier it is when you are working with a fine-grained wood like Unicorn's pear wood. The dowel and sandpaper method was used to finish off the arch, but it was hardly necessary. That wood is so good. it's even photogenic! ROTF

Or simply misunderstood by the son of an English teacher...

Wel this looks like a fine arch to me, how does this wood look with all that oak around it??
How the pear will look with all the oak around it, is the BIG question, Peter. The deck is also pear, but they are two very different kinds of Pear Wood. If I have the basic structure correct, I can always try to plank over it with oak, if the Pear doesn't look right.

Looks brilliant Heinrich. Never forget the scrap box- it never ceases to amaze.;)Cheers Grant

Thanks Grant. Scrap boxes are indeed amazing things, but you know it's funny. The more I think about this, the more it makes sense to me. This front canopy wall is really not a difficult thing to do - yet I am struggling for all I'm worth with something that should have been an afternoon's work to me. Just like @Dean62 Dean and his lion were in communication, I am thinking the ship is trying to tell me she doesn't want that front wall. This is what she wants to look like - sans front wall.

No front wall?….I voted for two “doors” ROTF . I think the one you made from Pear looks good, however it may look too obvious against the oak hull etc. Does it not work for you? Cheers Grant

Heinrich, I'm always impressed at what you achieve with only an xacto knife, model hand saw and sandpaper.
Thank you, my friend. It is not ideal, but I have used the hand tools for so long and have become so used to it that it has now become second nature. It probably disqualifies me from building anything more fancy, but with it comes its own sense of satisfaction if I manage to achieve something decent.
