HMS Enterprise 1774 midship cross-section in 1/160

Alan I know what you will say :-D Yes they are wrong in this place in this configuration of the ship (I read most of what you are posting... haha :-D) but I like them :-D Anyway, I appreciate it seeing you here in my buildlog, please take a seat :-)

I like your workmanship a lot! I was just curious as to why you are building her as a receiving hulk instead of a fighting ship when it would have had a well, shot locker, etc. I like your reason,.,,,,,,, you like them!! Your model, so whatever works for you :) :)
Allan

@AllanKP69 Whatever Information you can give me how it should look there (shot locker etc.) I would appreciate it :-)

A quick update. Next up is the lower deck... and I (almost) ruined it... haha.

I spent a while thinking about the best way to glue it together. CA glue is usually the go-to choice, but I find (though that might change) that it sets too quickly, meaning you can’t position the pieces neatly – which I think is absolutely crucial here. Then I had this brilliant idea: I’d use diluted wood glue and “iron” it together. Not a good idea :-D Not at all! The result was a totally warped, wavy, awful-looking, poorly aligned piece of rubbish of a deck, and I was... furious :-P

First of all, I’m about to get a new one to give it another go. Thanks to Unicorn Model! Until then, I’ve a) tried to salvage the old deck and, in doing so, b) worked out the hopefully best way to handle the next decks better :-D

I’ve extended the jig. I soaked the botched deck thoroughly and then managed to get it into reasonably good shape after all, with a nice, clean curve.

The deck is then fitted into the hull using the following jig, which gives it another curve along the transverse axis. It’s tricky to get this to look visually balanced. I’ve absolutely no idea yet how to glue it in properly. Oh well, I’ve got a deck to practise on :-)

Sorry Dirk, this is getting a little confusing for me. I am sure it is just terminology, but Enterprise had no orlop deck. As a fighting ship she had a fore platform and aft platform, lower deck, upper deck, QD and Forecastle. As a hulk she had the center platform added for the pressed men to be held prisoner until they were forced to serve on a fighting ship. If you want to add the main mast step, well and shot locker like before she was de-masted, disarmed, hulked and anchored at the Tower of London, the center platform beams that were added later will be in the way. The original drawings from before she was hulked as well as after she was hulked can be found on the RMG site in low resolution. The Wiki Commons site does not have them in high resolution so if you want the high res version they can be purchased from RMG, but their prices have gotten ridiculously high.

There are high resolution drawings on the Wiki Commons site of Hind (28) 1785 that might also be of a little help as they are far more clear. There may be differences in the layout though, but still, maybe helpful.

Yes, that is the inboard profile of her as a receiving ship for the pressed men. To recap the conversion from fighting ship to hulk......
Remove the well and shot locker
Remove the yards, masts and perhaps the mast steps
Remove the steering wheel
Remove cannon, powder room, etc.
Remove stores of rope and similar items no longer needed
Remove heaviest ship's boats

Add bumpers/fenders
Add center platform
Add large canvas covers, awnings, or permanent roof-like housing structures over the upper decks

Change the layout of cabins (see the deck plans before and after) This including additional or larger brigs and infirmaries.

Note that the drawing after conversion shows the upper section of the well on the lower deck but not in the hold. The ship will still leak, so why not leave the well and pumps on board and build the center platform around it? Maybe they did, but whatever I can find shows the well and locker being removed.

There is probably more :)
to do it "correct" I need to construct what is in the image below. Right?
Looks right to me :)

Hi Christian, that’s exactly what this is all about now, given that @AllanKP69 (waiting for your input Allan :-)) mentioned that the beams are wrong if you want the ship in the fighting configuration; so I’m just comparing the two plans side by side and still thinking about whether to go for the Hulk or the Fighting Ship :-)

This may help, or may cause more confusion. The left is the fighting ship configuration. The right has the well and locker on top of the center platform as you show it where the pressed men were held, taking away their already limited living space. It is up to you, but really should be one or the other. The well on top of the platform defeats the purpose of having it.

If you look at the upper and lower deck beams, they have been changed to some extent as well with the beam arms removed (assuming the contemporary drawings are representative)

Oh, sorry @AllanKP69 for the confusion with my prototype, the well surely will NOT be on the center platform but as in the fighting configuration :-) If I go the way the beams will be removed and the well will get the small "legs" like in the following image.
