Nice gratings and frames with nails, Grant.Ricochet Rabbit fully loaded
Decided to make some gratings. The kit gratings are difficult to get reasonable as they are very fragile and thin. All the other builds I see the other guys buying or using alternatives…..but I’m a stubborn South African so gave it a go. (Real reason it is a costly mission to get the parts to Melkbosstrand).

Something I picked up a little late is the 3x3mm wood provided varies in size considerably.

My attempts: View attachment 532047
You will see I am leaving some completely open showing the frame/coming and rabbets. I made all sides with a rabbet as I have to lift all fittings by 1.5mm as I am attaching these to the beams directly and going to build the deck afterwards. This is opposite to the kit design.

I have cut a few deck pieces to see how it will look with some pieces missing……nothing glued just trying to see if this design is going to work or am I heading into a world of failure………. We are going to find out sooner or later.

I am struggling to get my finishes to the level I want. I used steel wool to polish, but this changes the colour. I have bought some dremel bits for cleaning and polish so will try these when they get here.
Cheers Grant
Good evening Chuck. Hopefully it will come together as it is very bitty at the moment.Thank you for your kind words of encouragement I really do appreciate it. Cheers GrantGrant! Glad to see you're back at it! Lovely scale model eye-candy! Also, like pornography, I know excellence when I see it. That is some super tight craftsmanship on your gratings, sir!
Finally, since I see who is saying that your work is superlative, which it is, true story! - I know not to believe them when they post the same language in my log
Speedy progress on your rehab and your build! Keep producing the magnificent eye-candy!
Blessings. Peace. Gratitude.
Chuck
Hi Roger. Thankfully not although some days it feels a little rustyReally beautiful job on those hatches Grant. As I glanced at your first photo in that post I thought “oh no, his new knee is rusting already”.
Wishing you a speedy and successful recovery.

Superb gratings!!
Thank you kindly John and Peter.Nice gratings and frames with nails, Grant.
Regards, Peter
Thank you very much Allan. For a relatively simple project these gratings gave me a hard timeNot only are the gratings looking very well done, the coamings and head ledges with the rounding of the corners above the level of the deck is spot on. Well done.
Allan

Good morning. Thank you for the compliment. I agree with you, I think this applies to all aspects of ship building in that if you want something truely accurate you need to build it yourself. Unfortunately my skill levels are not quite there yetHello, GrantTyler.
The grating you made is great!
I prefer to make my own lattice.
It is good to make your own lattice, because you will get a lattice that you are satisfied with.
Your craftsmanship is the best!
Good morning Thomas. Thank you and I hope you are doing very well and enjoy your time in Sweden. My name whiskey is not the best tho…Hello Grant,
greetings from Sweden. Here are some pictures because I thought about you.
Kind regards
Thomas

Thanks Sergey. Whew, I cannot believe how many times I have read your log of the Alert to help me get my cherry looking a little better. I appreciate your detailed posts. I think I’m getting there. I don’t have any nice oils down here so I have to use poly but so far not too bad. Cheers GrantGreat job, both the hull and the grilles, glad you're back and enjoying our photos![]()
How long is your guarantee of screwing valid, when your hope is fulfilled and it is no longer noticeable?I need to put ricochet rabbit back in his box before I get myself into trouble.
I have nothing finished and adding deck furniture before finishing the bulkwalks is pretty stupid…..![]()

Anyway here are the 2 riding bits. I have modified the kit bits to get close to Goodwins interpretation. Here are pics from Goodwin:

And my attempts at modifying the parts. You will notice the 1.5mm added to the bottom of the bits which I will still plank around some aspects. I had to do this to keep the scale right as the kit just adds parts to the deck.

Trying to work out the deck pattern while leaving off planks haphazardly is interesting……I can guarantee I have screwed this up. Hopefully it will not be noticeable as I move forward.
Cheers Grant
Grant? Hello? Grant? Now where did he go?
Good morning Peter. I’m this instance I think you may claim successfully. It will work out as I am leaving a lot of the deck open to see the beams, carlings etc so unless you are a Scandinavian engineer you will not pick this up, but I definitely have lost the pattern. How long is your guarantee of screwing valid, when your hope is fulfilled and it is no longer noticeable?
You have already found several solutions, so I am confident that it will work out. I will not be making a claim under the guarantee you offered, Grant.
Regards, Peter
Thank you kindly Paul. Yep that Hello Grant, Hi,Hi little fellow needs to be locked up.Very tidy work on the mini-constructions, Grant.
Grant? Hello? Grant? Now where did he go?
Hi Russ, nope I wish- it’s that ricochet rabbit who always makes me loose sequence in my buildingSquirrel!
Wow, Grant. That's amazing!!I need to put ricochet rabbit back in his box before I get myself into trouble.
