Hello,

I’m starting my first my paper ship this morning and my first build thread on this forum. The kit came on a bunch of large sheets of different weights. Some have to be glued to .5mm or 1mm cardstock. I’m scanning in each sheet then I’ll print them on the appropriate thickness of paper. That way if I screw up a part I’ll have a backup. If I do this right, I’ll still have all the original sheets completely uncut. A new kit still! That’s one of the benefits of paper. I plan on using very thin wood veneer for the decking and any other place where actual wood is visible. I’ll use paper of various thicknesses for any parts that get painted. This is truly a mixed media kit. When it’s done I don’t want it to look like a paper kit. I also want to experiment with some mold making and casting for some of the repetitive parts like the cannons, the cradle things that the cannons sit in (I still have a lot to learn about ships, lol), and for some of the fittings that are all over the ship. Today I’m going to start on the little boats. I figured this will be a fun way to ease into this huge project, and they look really cool.

I know I’ll have lots of questions along the way and I appreciate any help I can get. I’m not new to modeling and I’m not new to working with paper, but I am new to ship modeling. I’m going to take this slow and work on one bit at a time. I’m treating this like a bunch of smaller kits so I don’t get overwhelmed and burnt out. Thank you in advance, I know I’ll be bugging you guys!

Thanks! I’ll post as I build. But I know this’ll be sloooooow going.
Hello George, we are not in the rush, but a bunch of curious people here. We love pictures (a lot), well did I said we love pictures? I mean, take your time, but... don't forget about us! :)

Hi George
you have chosen a beautiful model. It is not easy as choosing the first cardboard sailing ship. Ask and take your time. Cardboard is a very grateful building material, but behaves a little differently than wood. Cut very carefully, shape each element so that it "fits" without glue. And don't use too much force - the cardboard is soft :))

Regards
Tomek

George,

As a master paper modeler I'm looking forward to your build.
Assuming that this is your first paper model build I have a couple of suggestions. When building the bulkhead frame use CA glue. PVC glue has a bad habit of warping the frame. the second is to color the edges of the parts as you build the model. I use gouache type watercolors but you can also use water color pencils.

If you have any questions you can PM me.

Jim Nunn.

Very nice to meet you, Jim, and thank you for your offer of help, I greatly appreciate it. I think I remember you from the Paper Modelers forum. I’m new to ship modeling, except for the Revell USS Constitution that I built when I was 11, but that’s another story, lol. I’ve been building models from paper, plastic, wood, resin, brass, etc. for years. I love modeling of all kinds. Most recently, I’ve been building Wingnut Wings WWI planes in 1/32 scale. I do love working with paper, though. I love that it can become anything and when done right, it transcends the flat paper that most people know. I’ve been eyeing these Shipyard paper models for years and I finally bit the bullet since they combine two of my loves; paper models and sailing ships. One thing I love about WWI biplanes is the rigging. These old ships have rigging in spades! We’ll see how this goes. I’ve been working on a lifeboat as a test of some techniques I’m experimenting with. I’ll have some progress to post very soon.

PS, I see you’re in Glendora. I’m in Burbank. We’ll have to meet up at a model show sometime.

I finished my first paper lifeboat for the 1/96 HMS Enterprize. Only 3 more to go then I gotta build the ship. I’ve greatly strayed from the kit parts and directions since I’ve been influenced by an amazing modeler from the Czech Republic named Doris. She builds the best paper ship models I’ve ever seen, in fact they are among the best of any ship models. Her work can be found on papermodelers.com . Search for Doris. Her Royal Caroline is beyond belief. Her techniques are fairly new to me and I hope to at least be in the ballpark of what she has done.

Here are some photos that hopefully explain how I’ve built this lifeboat.475F614C-E386-4EE2-AE0B-70115BC84ED8.jpegB0622D1D-129A-4E03-BF76-7644834D282A.jpeg64606C5D-EE9E-4322-9F96-E14D9197D680.jpegF5F58891-E634-46C7-9F49-C90E6F631768.jpeg979A8DA8-7541-437E-A7D2-69B3D3B8560F.jpeg96B849EC-C96A-403B-8588-A1EE8D91CB85.jpegFEDBE4ED-A1C1-495C-8E45-5F5DEB34D2F0.jpeg3C33AF6C-98F6-470E-B782-DA79D1DE603B.jpeg238027CF-E061-407D-8837-ECCE77ACB413.jpeg5FD557D9-6B54-455F-9150-2A52FA5EA3B3.jpeg20DD7636-967C-47AC-9374-2D2650E6185D.jpegC0F2005D-B8BE-4AB6-9EBE-047202A61C0C.jpegC4CCABC9-A0B2-4D89-B98F-792DABF0560A.jpeg03451F7A-C14C-4442-ACC3-107A98842990.jpeg274DA75A-2F29-4804-9D34-A8C66679773E.jpeg6DC164C6-A2AF-4E99-A837-BD738F3A12D3.jpeg92B67652-F8D0-4CA9-B3E2-5BB76F1332F2.jpeg0A7F8D4A-626B-4041-B169-D6230DF491BE.jpegA0CFF143-B628-4571-8D0B-E584FA4B7D96.jpeg

Wauuu, I have seen the Doris buildsfrom page you suggested and it is out of this world. My mind just stopped. How can anything like this be possible from paper? It is just showing that nothing is impossible and you can do anything.

Also your build is beautiful. I have one question for you. Are you using wood strips in your build or everything is paper? Are you combining it?

I’m using wood colored contact paper from d-c-fix. This is what Doris uses.

Amazing. I have read that Doris us out for few years. I would like to see hers model on live. She is form Czech rupublic so not far away from me :D.
But at least there are videos of her achievements on youtube.

Your work truly amazing. It is so real looking.

I would also like to see her work in person, but I’m in the US so I don’t think that will happen. I hope you’re able to contact her. I haven’t seen anything new from her in a few years. I wonder if she’s still building ships.

Thanks for the compliment!

-George

I have written on hers youtube channel in order to contact her. But it is looking that she havent been online for couple of years.
