HMS Portland 1770 by Trussben - Portland Scale Ship Co. - 1:48 - 50 gun 4th rate.

Only a couple more jig pieces to be installed, these MDF parts sit on top of the previous jigs and give more support to the bulkhead extensions at the level of the upper gundeck, they get screwed into the lower jigs to keep them securely in place.
These MDF sections as you can see also contain all of the gunport framing parts.

Here are the 6 lower frame locator parts glued to the former, 3 on each side. They are laser etched with the bulkhead locations at the top and the individual frame identifiers, very simple to figure out. I glued with a mixture of PVA and CA.

Here are the upper frame locator pieces, two mdf parts on each side that get clipped into the former at the bow and then into grooves on each bulkhead, I used a few rubber bands and some clamps to keep them securely in place while the glue dried.
Now that these have been installed I need to start masking off the keel and other parts so I can paint the former and all bulkheads flat matt black below the level of the gundeck so nothing can be seen behind the framing, or at least make it as invisible as possible.

Hi All,

Im going to start a build log of my latest model kit of HMS Portland 1770, which was a 4th rate of 50guns.
This kit is currently not available yet for general sale and I was asked by the designer to build one of the first prototypes, this will be a Hybrid POF/POB kit in the classic 1:48 scale, size will be very large in this scale without and masts or rigging.
The kit as I said is currently still under development but here you can see what the designer is aiming for it to look like and represent the Marshall paintings of the contempory model.

I shall keep updating this log as the build progresses.

Hi Trussben

Definitely pulling up a chair to watch this awesome creation, one ship build I have never seen before makes it that bit more interesting to :)

The beginning of the stern framing starts with the “wing” transom, this part has etched and cut into it the positions for the counter Timbers and the aft gunports.
I carefully removed the laser char and then using heat I bent it into shape so that it clicked into the jig slots correctly.
It only gets glued to the central former at the moment - NOT to the jig pieces

All six counter Timbers installed, the other horizontal ones are for the framing of the aft gunports and the other transoms.
The long runners down each side of the ship are not yet glued in place, just there to keep everything in its place until this stern framing is completed.

I get the appeal of 1:48 scale, but who has room for these behemoths? We need more kits like these in 1:64 scale.
I hear you!
Portsmouth UK is an island city, we're packed in pretty tight in terraced houses, pretty small. (handy for HMS Victory though!)
Even 1:64 will soon take up my spare wall space. I'm planning the English Rev. Cutter Diligence, and Le Coureur, French lugger, both are 70 feet L.O.D. At 1:48 they are 50cmm stem to stern, ie, the same as a 1:64 frigate! I'm having to alter the plans to 1:54 which will give a build of 40cm stem to stern.
Even so, I can see some builds given as presents to friends to make room!
Scratch building at 1:48 is a real pleasure, you can use proper, not miniture, woodworking tools! If I had more room it'd be quarter scale or bigger!

Beautiful job on a beautiful ship.

I have always been fascinated by how 2D material becomes 3D structure(s). I wish I had the ability to create using computers and transfer that to an actual item.
Simply beautiful!
Bravo and thank you for sharing!!
Very interested.

I'm confused as to where the jig ends and model starts. Is all this going to be left in place but covered by the planking?
