HMS Portland 1770 by Trussben - Portland Scale Ship Co. - 1:48 - 50 gun 4th rate.

Upper hull sanding and fairing has been completed so I masked off and starting prepping the gunports for paint.
First any little gaps in and around the ports were filled with filler and then sanded gently back and then two coats of Tamiya surface primer was applied, next up will be painting the ports in red ochre, then fitting the frieze panels and finally to complete the lower hull sanding.

Planking strips all made for the impending outer works.

At full size and (1:48) they are as follows going downwards along the hull:-

3" ( 0.0625") thick basswood frieze panels as supplied with the kit.
3" ( 0.0625") thick boxwood from Channel wales up to the frieze panels ( 2 strakes ).
5" ( 0.1042") thick boxwood Channel wales ( 3 strakes )
4" ( 0.0833") thick boxwood thickstuff above wales ( 4 strakes )
5.5" ( 0.1145") thick ebony black strake ( 1 strake )
6" ( 0.125") thick ebony Main wales ( 4 strakes )
4" ( 0.0833") thick Holly thickstuff below wales ( 1-2 strakes as required )

The sizes above came from the "scantlings" book for a 50gun 4th rate ( steel's table ).

How will the kit address the need to reduce the breadth of the planks and shape them if spiled planks will not be included in the kit?
Thanks

The kit will have "tick" strips supplied that will be glued to each bulkhead showing the exact width and position of each plank along the hull, you must then sand and bend each of your new planks to fit that plan, it will become apparent in my next few posts.
Please remember that the kit is designed for planking from the wales and up, so there is a minimum amount of spiling needed to be done, however if somebody wished to plank all the way down to the keel they would have to figure that out themselves.

That is a very good idea!! Why not have them marked for the entire length of each frame so if the builder chooses to plank further down or part way up from the garboard for some number of strakes, the tick strips will be there. No extra cost to the kit maker and allows choices,
they would have to figure that out themselves
Tough love? :)

Planking on the Stbd side from the frieze panels down to and including the channel wales has been completed except for the foremost upper piece of the channel wale which the instructions say to leave out at the moment.
All of the gunports will need going back to, to be refined and repainted, the upper deck aft two and QD aft port will need the edges fixing for the port lids.
I will now move to the port side and do the same.

Tick strips being supplied in a kit will be one of the best ideas we have seen in a long time. It would be even more important on hulls that are to be fully planked.
