HMS Sovereign of the Seas - Bashing DeAgostini Beyond Believable Boundaries

Looks really good.

Glad to hear you're using Blender. I'm still, well, I hesitate to say "learning" as that would mean I was understanding and progressing. I make some things. Can't sculpt. Thought it would be OK, but there is such a difference between moving the mouse and the result. I mostly forget handy shortcuts and procedures, but I did repose a tank figure. (Got some weird print issues with putting an object in his hand, but...)

I have a Anycubic Photon Mono SE. Great little machine. Last year I also upgraded to a Saturn 3. Though I love MORE DETAIL MORE DETAIL, comparing the same piece between printers is interesting. The higher res printer is obviously better, but I don't see an amazing difference between them, and if anyone is looking to get into 3D resin printing, don't be scared of getting a "low resolution" printer to start, you'll still be very happy.

Some more decoration bits created in Blender 3D today. The seahorse was a free model which required the tail to be reshaped to the outline of the decoration on the hull, which was easily done using the bend tool in Blender 3D. This is slow work for someone new to Blender, but it will be worth it.

A better view, with the gold texture off.

Hi Kurt,

I'm curious if you have test printed any of these with your newer printer? Will the details be preserved at your scale?

Wow Kurt. This is plenty design work. So far they look brilliant. Should print really well. Cheers Grant

The 3D printer is an Elegoo Saturn 4, a 12k resolution printer which can create crisp details such as those on the seahorses. I have not printed any parts out yet, but the fellow I sold the 2k printer to did some printed objects with it and even that resin printer made small details without a problem. The Saturn 4 is six times better. When I get around to testing the new printer, the results will be posted here.

Many of the parts will have to be reprinted after adjustments are made for scale and sheer angle, especially for parts on the stern Castle, which are angled vertically to the aft. That will all be done when I get into the printing phase of these decorations. Several of the decorations will be made in various sizes with several spares to allow choosing of the correct size for fitment.

A few decoration panel columns have been made in different sizes. I'm creating the easy stuff first in Blender 3D.

Long column for the upper gallery windows

Shorter column for the row below the upper gallery windows

Taller columns for the lower gallery windows

Military objects for one of the decoration panels are being created one at a time. So far, a spear, bundle of fasces, and a matchlock musket have been made for one panel of decorations.

A picture of a matchlock musket was used to heavily modify a 19th century musket in a new, simplified model, which is in grayscale at the top.

Here are the assembled objects so far.

As you can see, there a few more objects to add to this panel, such as the shield, bands around the fasces, and ribbon decoration at the top. The seahorses have already been designed and will be added separately.

Good morning Kurt. Wow you have really taken this to another level. I attempt to design and print deadeyes and belay pins and this is a mission for me. What you are doing is brilliant. Kudos. Cheers Grant

Thanks buddy! I did note that for the column of pieces, I will have to shear the left and right sides, such that the top and bottom sides of each column are slanted to match the sheer of the decorations on each gallery. This is easily done in the Blender 3D software. That will be the last step for those pieces before I print them on the resin printer. The only concern is that the narrow parts of the decoration will be very delicate and thin. I’m here to see how they would turn out.

Good morning Kurt and all the modelers.

I'm Alex (Tuvok) and I'm building the Sovereign of the Seas too. We wrote to each other on the Italian forum about the decorations of the model.

I follow your work with interest, which I consider excellent and I will certainly draw useful information for mine as well.

I apologize in advance for my English.

Alex
