Hey Kurt,

I was really shocked when I read that your hard drive crashed. I know the feeling and have had bad experiences myself with a hard drive crashing. Unfortunately, mine was unrecoverable. That's why I only use external hard drives and they are not encrypted so that they are easier to restore if necessary. But I always have ×2, otherwise there's no point ... Great work you're doing and I'm a big fan of your project. It's nice how you do it. I have absolutely no idea about Blender. But I just have to get to grips with it. I think you just have to get started with Blender and then the routine comes ... I would love to have your Blender skills ... Just great ...

I started from knowing nothing about Blender, and even a year and a half later, I still feel like I'm only tapping into 10% of what the program can offer. Just follow me and start the long road to learning Blender, and if you put in the time, you can make workable models too.

Hi Daniel, or you can buy a table top NAS. And set automatically any changes from one disc to your NAS.
No need for MS.

Hello PapaT, that's always good advice. At first, I didn't care for One Drive as it seemed too invasive but now it's convenient for my needs.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft, especially since it took so much work to disable all the spyware they have in Windows 11, and make Windows 11 a LOCAL account, not tied to signing in to a Microsoft account. MS is getting very greedy on gathering our personal data, and each window update turns the spyware in Windows 11 back on! Sneaky bastards.

Well, I can't resist chiming in. Years ago, I bought a new computer even though I didn't need one. I bought it so I could run Windows 10, which Microsoft promised would be their last operating system. That didn't work out too well. I am also not fond of One Drive. I used it until it corrupted an Excel workbook full of ship dimensions that I'd stored on it. I'll never use it again. All in all, I think Kurt is being far too kind to Microsoft.

Back to work. The hancing piece on the lower balcony of the gallery is being formed with an online asset (dragon) and the human figure taken from the upper balcony hancing piece. The tail still needs to be posed and a fish tail fitted to it.

Can anyone guess what these are? I need help interpreting this part of the engraving. If this is supposed to be a Scottish unicorn, what are these?

Good afternoon! This is, of course, a unicorn. But you showed the tail incorrectly.
Unicorns have a different tail than horses. It's more like a zebra's. The crown wasn't always there. On the English coat of arms, the unicorn had a tassel at the end of its tail that was always identical, and very similar to the one painted on the ship. The tassel at the end of the tail consisted of three strands, the top strand being the longest, and the lower strands each shorter than the one before. Perhaps De Velde simply didn't have the space or the inclination to paint the tail in detail, and only had the energy for the tassel.

This is an amazing thread. Kurt's knowledge of Blender and his study of the decorations is awesome and, it is nicely complemented by the information others are supplying. I doubt there is a more accurate set of decorations anywhere!

Wolfgang Rotter's HMS Sovereign of the Seas in Germany is far better than mine will be. He spend years researching the ship. Go check it out @CharlieT ! This is what I'm aiming for, although it will fall short of the mark in several areas. However, my model has a furnished interior and will be fully rigged with sails, not just an Admiralty model.










The detail here is incredible!
