MarisStella - New Kit HMS Speedy 1:48

www.marisstella.hr/eng

Maris Stella Ltd is pleased to announce the addition of the HMS Speedy, HMS Vensejo and HMS Sophie Brig-Sloops, in 1:48 scale, to its model ship kit line. Speedy and Vensejo have been heavily researched. HMS Sophie is our version of the fictional Brig-Sloop, representing a combination of the two, described in a novel by Patrick O'Brian. The Maris Stella kit version of HMS Speedy uses the sail plan, rigging, armament and flagging as of her original commissioning. To maximize authenticity, we have freshly designed all cannon, carronade and swivel guns for the three kits, each of the type, weight and time frame appropriate, using Armstrong and Blomefield construction formula, historical patterns and photos of antiques.

Maris Stella kits are suitable for intermediate level modelers. For those who want to go a step beyond, we are providing copper hull plates, details on period appropriate stains and paint schemes, and rigging rope diameter information. Anticipated order of release is Speedy, Vensejo and Sophie, in that order, in a time frame from 2018 through the first half of 2019.

This HMS Speedy model will be a market-class leader. Our three-dimensional modeling of the Admiralty draughts and the kit’s plank on bulwark hull construction with 19 bulkheads makes it easy for even casual modelers to achieve the original hull lines with great accuracy.

At this time, I only have permission to show a few of instruction book draft 3D renders of HMS Speedy. Note how the model achieves the novel look and feel of the Speedy-Class Brig!

Hallo @MarisStella
we wish you all the BEST and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Enjoy your special day

Looks like the Speedy is almost with us, an unboxing here from the excellent Olha…
Many Thanks for showing us the video

But it seems, that the model kit is still not officially released, because you can not find the offer on their web-page
- the most actual model there is still the HMS Ontario

"Premiere of a new KIT manufactured by Croatian manufacturer MarisStella. It will soon be available in the official store and distributors ..."

I guess Olha received the video from Marisstella

It does look like a good kit! Pitty, Maristela still uses average quality blocks and gun barrels. A high-end kit should be contained high-end parts, IMHO.
Yup... another great kit with subpar fittings. This is why we have suppliers like Syren, Crafty Sailor, and others for blocks, cleats, deadeyes, etc. Where can one get turned brass or 3D-printed cannons at that scale though?

Well, they can definitely source your ropes for their kits, I am sure you would give them a discount ;) Barrels can be sourced from China, Many manufacturers offered CNC brass barrels, also as you mention 3D printed ones. Ironically, Maristella offered 3D printed parts, why not printed barrels?

I might have in the future turned brass cannons ,or maybe resin?

Hms Speedy is out for sale

In the beginning, There was supposed to be a version that was the 'HMS Sophie'. Will this be available or a conversion kit maybe?
I believe not.

HMS Sophie is a combination of the Hull of HMS Vensejo, an actual ship, and the measurements from HMS Speedy, another real ship, and Steel's table for a brig.

The HMS Speedy kit is out.

Plans for HMS Vensejo were drawn, about a year ago, and a license secured for commercial use from the Maritime Museum holding them, should Maristella decide to proceed with the kit.

The description of HMS Sophie is in a copyrighted work and therefore, arguably, making a ship kit of HMS Sophie requires a license as it is, again arguably, a derivative work. The Estate of Patrick O'Brian indicated interest in the project through a former agent to me, but they had transferred the copyrights to a third party. The third party, despite repeated efforts to contact them about the matter, never responded. That makes it very risky to proceed with the HMS Sophie project. The same risk would apply to any conversion kit.

You could not "bash" the Vensejo kit because the hull is far longer than the measurements of HMS Speedy and HMS Sophie. You could not "bash" an HMS Speedy kit because the hull design is far different from that described by Patrick O' Brian for his HMS Sophie. You will see a few folks doing that, but as a Patrick O'Brian fan I can tell you it simply does not work. Incidentally, the ship Patrick O' Brian described would rapidly flood and sink because the Captain's cabin windows are too low if you follow his description literally (but that's an easy fix). Everything else can be done.
