HMS Surprise - Mamoli 1:75 Build

Hi all...FINALLY getting back to the shop. My next question deals with the planking above the gun ports up to the bulwarks supports. There is absolutely nothing in the directions that day how many planks to go up, and the only picture in the instructions shows 3 planks at the stern. I am guessing that is correct, with 2 on the forecastle...? And...are these the limewood planks or the finish planking?

You're right about those three planks above the top of the gun ports. That's three finish planks, it's gonna be a number of limewood planks sufficient to do the job. What I mean is:

I ended up doing a lot of looking at the full-sized sheet showing the ship in profile and from above looking at the deck. I took lots of measurements and did the best I could. These are the salient points as I see them:

-A square stock trim piece goes above those three finish planks above the gun ports, then one more finish plank above that trim piece brings you to deck level. I only laid down the trim piece forward and aft of the middle section of the hull, where there is no railing.

-The deck level curves up as it proceeds aft. But the height of the railing on the poop is the same, so further rough planking with the limewood (and finish planking on top of the rough) should be tapered.

-From the gun ports up to the railing you should have limewood rough planking sandwiched between finish planking on the outer hull and inside the bulwarks.

-Same goes for the forecastle except no need to taper the planks.

-Decide how high you want the railing to go based on your cannon/carronades. Note that there is a cutout for each of the cannon, kinda like a partial gun port....does that make sense? You'll figure it out based on the profile view of that full-sized plan sheet.

Bottom line is that I probably spent as much time staring at the full-sized plan sheet as I did actually working on the ship.

How is your work on the Surprise going? Any progress, or maybe some help needed?

Just re-started, I finished Rattlesnake and a side project, a San Francisco cable car. Getting closer to starting to mast.

After a 5 year hiatus I am finally getting back to working on the Surprise. The first thing I had to do is reshape the bows to conform more with a bluff shape instead of a sharper "pointy" shape. I had posted a thread asking for advise on how to do that, and ended up using a lot of wood filler to get the shape more appropriate.
Unfortunately, I had started the second layer of planking on one side, so some of that got covered with the filler. The other side still was the lower layer of planking, so that worked out nicely.
I also built a Master Korabel life boat to use instead of the pot metal one that came with the kit.
Pictures to come soon.
Thank you to everyone for sharing your wisdom and encouragement.

Well, here is an update on the Surprise. I have finished the hull painting (the yellow strpe is actually more of a golden yellow than the picture shows), the bows are in the proper shape (I think) and the decking is now complete.
I have the side handrails built and installed and the bow pin rail is done.
More pictures to follow.
Question for the group...the directions for the rudder seem to show a little block of wood for the pins, but I cannot find any references to that other than one picture in the directions. Any ideas,or how you handled it?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

What do the picture/s look like.
Here are the pictures from the instructions and the parts to use.
I did build a small boat with an attachable rudder which I had to build the pintles for, so I am "assuming" this will be similar. The boat will be replacing the metal one that came with the kit.

Unfortunately the plan drawings are for an old version of the kit and do not show the new PE pieces.

I think if you look at the image from YouTube you might get an idea how to proceed.

FWIW and for the future, deck planking was not done like the kit shows. The pattern was either 3 or 4 butt, not two. An exception is the orlop where there were often short planks set into rabbets in the deck beams or rested on the top of the beams with battens on top of the beams.

Have you compared the contemporary drawings of the Surprise with the Mamoli version? I only ask because the rudder does not look like a rudder on any British ship in the 18th century
Cheers,
Allan
