HMS Thorn. Scratch build Swan class following the books written by David Antscherl and Greg Herbert

I attended a course a few months ago in preperation for carving figures on my Fubbs. Its great fun and even at my age, the muscles learn very quickly and progress is rapid. I'm now working through Bill Short's book on carving using dental drill bits and scapels and finding my carving course was an excellent foundation. Enjoy.

May I suggest, after my minimal experience of a few months, to request AI to render design into 3D. I simply requested ChatGPT to do so.From a simple drawing, the depth perception is enhanced. Also 2 simple tools- small dental burrs and disposable chisel blades-from 2 to 5 mm.

20261031_084530.jpg Here is 2 carvings I have done, and the first one, I won awards for and the second one, big discussions how I did the eyes. With the first one, you can see I have used other woods and fitted with steady hands with plenty of trial and error. The left-hand carving, of a Knome Forest Dweller, (some crazy name I thought up) was made out of African Plum Tree. A tree that went berserk in next doors property and I had to keep it trimmed. I saved a few big branches (as I am a white ant) and dried then properly, then cut out blanks for carving with. The stand is a bit of driftwood fitted to a base made out of Desert Pine.
With the second one I made out of Mahogony and at the carving club the assignment was to make a Father Xmas with a theme: My version of my thinking, when there was a lot of upheaval in the middle east and shows Father Xmas after he flew through the area (I have not carved a half carcass of a Reindeer he was left with) but at least half the Sled came back with him and a head of the "main man still in contact". Good to notice he still had his hat. The red colour mahogany, symbolizes scorching to the max.
With his eyes I used 2 dissimilar woods to inlay the Sclera (white of the eye)and that was the Plum tree as it has a reddish appearance depicting bloodshot eyes. LOL and the Iris was a darker colour and the Pupil being made out of Blood wood. I used slivers of wood finely shaped and fitted and was fun doing it..... and there is more coming up.
