HMS Victory- Caldercraft

2 1/2 days worth. I bought a set of jewelers tweezers that have helped move this along quicker. I will varnish each side as I complete to protect from oxidation and help seal the plates.

Hi
2 additional questions on the copper plating:
- Are you using the copper provided by Caldercraft in the kit or are you using a ribbon copper?
- What glue do you use to place the plates? Medium CA?

Thanks

I used the copper that came with the kit. I started out using medium CA but changed to thick CA which didn't run as much as the medium.

Finished upper deck cannons assemblies and working on rigging which is turning out to be an excruciating experience. I'm of the belief that you either have to have tremendously expensive tools or 3 hands to complete this task as well as great eyesight even with a magnifier. The instructions are a little vague so research in my books helped. This will take awhile and I hope I have hair left afterwards.

I'm close to finishing the rigging of the upper deck cannons then I'll move to installing the quarterdeck. I bought an assortment of threader to help with the rigging otherwise it would have impossible. I had to pinch the threader tip in order to thread the small eyelets and blocks which worked well.

Finished the upper deck cannons rigging and now working on the quarterdeck assemblies (fun part compared to cannons riggings). Starting to look somewhat like a ship. The screen assembly is located for a fitting and will be completed and set aside this weekend. On a side note my youngest daughter just got accepted to Oxford University in England for her PhD. Now I'll have an excuse to go see her and visit the real HMS Victory while there.

Hello Senior Golfer,

With Caldercraft's Victory, you have made a very good choice. Wonderful materials and ditto drawings. The only downside is the construction description. But you will definitely need to consult some books to properly complete this adventure.

I myself started this amazing project in March 2022

At the moment, I have the hull completely finished, the masts are on and I am about to start on the ropework.

I have only been active on SOS for a few months myself and I must say, a world opens up for you here. Here I try to summarise my entire process in a few chapters in a nutshell until I get back in sync. I have also noticed that you have become a loyal follower of my build report. Thanks for this.

For more details of my adventure, take a look at my Dutch building blog. The comments from other good builders are also very worthwhile. https://www.modelbouwforum.nl/threads/hms-victory-van-caldercraft-door-wil.281364/

I will continue to follow you. Good luck with this wonderful challenge

PERFECTLY STATED.

We all have our favorites for different eras and nationalities, but for the widest range of British ships such as your Victory, including years and rates James Lees' Masting and Rigging English Ships of War cannot be beat if you are into the details. His drawings and explanations on how ships were rigged at various times and giving the sizes of every mast, yard and line is extremely helpful.

Allan, Do you have any suggestions on rope making equipment? I've seen some that are very expensive to very simple.

I have done it and I hate it even though the rope looked good. I used the cheap set up from Syren but as I usually only rig schooners not a lot of rope or sizes are needed. If I ever have to rig a frigate or ship-of-the-line I would make my own rope as there are dozens of circumferences needed so it would save a lot of money and I would use the set up from Syren, or at least give it a good try before looking to buy something more complex and expensive. I am sure there a lot of members with far more experience in making rope that will be able to help you make a decision.

Very nice progress
Excellent

Assembling the quarterdeck and poop deck cannons this weekend before gluing the quarterdeck screen and the final quarterdeck assemblies. The ladders were not fun again but got through them without too much trouble.
