HMS Victory- Caldercraft

Finished 1st planking and quarter galleries. Galleries were a bear for me and actually had to redo one side because of being off 3/16". Starting on middle gun deck planking tomorrow then on to 2nd planking. I will take my time on this as I'm always nervous about screwing this up. Been looking for a pattern online for this but haven't found one yet.

Finished planking the middle gun deck and moving to lining the two entry ports tomorrow after church. 2nd planking to follow. Not perfect but I'm satisfied with my lack of the abilities of experienced ship builders here and that's all that matters right now. There is so much knowledge here to absorb and to put to practice and I need to just be patient. I started this project hoping to be able to finish and enjoy. I'm 77 years old and my family history is one of not making 80. My mother was 74 and my father 76 when they died so I have a high bar set. Wish me luck. Bill

Good morning. I will pull up a chair and watch this build. Such an impressive ship and this is the best kit on the market (IMHO) to build. You are off to a fine start. Enjoy. Cheers Grant
 
Finished the rear fascia using a lighted magnifier to paint. I was planning to have this done by my youngest daughter who is busy applying for schools for her PHD but tackled it myself. Starting 2nd planking today and hopefully finish this or next week.

I'm going to have my artistic daughter touch up my paintings as I have a hard time staying steady. I may have her completely redo both galleries paint wise.
 
Sorry to hear of your respiratory delays. I would recommend that irrespective of illness, when you do sanding of the hull you wear a protective face mask. Sawdust is not good for lungs. Ask me how I know.
Your Victory is looking nice.
The other small piece of advice I would offer is to consider finishing all the large scale wood construction before starting on the more delicate and painted areas such as the bow and stern, as they may get damaged or marked whilst doing the large wooden stuff.
Keep up your great work and the log its fun to follow along.

Are the stern carvings from the kit? The reason I ask is concerning the fit of the outboard carvings adjacent to the balusters and lights. Probably easier to explain with the photo of Victory below.

Bold move for the 3rd build! I'm new to this also, but not brave enough for Victory just yet. Will watch your build with interest. Good luck, looks great so far!
 
Thanks. It is a challenge for sure. I have finished the 2nd planking of the hull and the upper gun deck and now framing the gun ports. One of the problems I'm running into is some of the parts are disintegrating upon cutting out especially the mast casings. I will be contacting Jotika as I proceed to get replacements. I built a Lazy Susan base to help maneuver around the ship as I proceed which has helped tremendously.

I've finished lining the gun ports on the port side and moving to the starboard side. This is really a pain in the a__ if you know what I mean. Copper plating comes next and will take a month or two to complete according to PaulV and others.

Finished lining all the gun ports and painted the hull. Proceeding to copper the starboard hull which will take some time although I did five rows today working intermittently. Also started painting the cannons which took 2 coats. Thinking about using spray paint to speed the process. I will test first.
