HMS Victory- Caldercraft

Finished gun port lids and working on pre-rigging. Fore and Mid masts are complete and Mizzen will be completed shortly. Tomorrow I will start on the standing rigging. I have a question regarding the lower, main lower and cross jack slings. What are they made of? I'm guessing they are ropes made from threads. I cant find anything in the instructions nor my books.

Finished all lower shrouds, staves, etc and working on upper shrouds. I couldn't live without needle threader nor my lazy Susan that I built to rotate my ship. I'll forward some pics tomorrow as I'm in bed exhausted.

Just wanted to say you are doing a remarkable job. I haven't looked at my build since April or May. The only time I look is when I'm moving her out of the way to get some other thing out of the basement.

But your posts are getting me excited to get back into it!

Well done!
Chris

Thanks Chris, that means alot to me as I'm an admirer of your ship and your work. It's been an inspiration to me and I look forward to you finishing your beautiful ship.

Close to finishing the standing rigging. I decided to redo all the deadeye shrouds in order to paint them black and to straighten them up. Looking through all the books I have and the limited instructions given I have no clue where and how many cleets go on the lower shroud. Please let me know if you're aware. I completed the ratings but not satisfied as to how they came out but I will live with it. I'm sure the actual ship that went to sea was had somewhat relaxed ratings but I could be wrong.

I am guessing you are speaking about the lanyards? The shrouds already appear to be black in your photos. If it is the lanyards in question this has been an open debate for years and no one, so far, seems to have any information based on contemporary sources that address this one way or the other.

Regarding cleats, that is a long search. James Lees gives belaying points in his book but takes some searching. The main topsail yard lifts were belayed to cleats on the 3rd or fourth shroud on some vessels, but there may be more than these on Victory. Steel may have this information in The Elements and Practice of Rigging and Seamanship as well and is available for free if you do not already have it.

Thanks Allan, I can always rely on you for good information somewhat like Google.

I have no more knowledge than anyone else, but I do have a decent library of books, and contemporary contracts and drawings and happy to share what I can. The problem is finding the time. Like you I am a FLSeniorgolfer and it takes a lot of time away from the shop. At least it is good excerise and not TOO strenuous on these old bones :)
