HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning. I have been working on introducing AI (artificial intelligence) software products into some of the businesses and attended an AI summit in Johannesburg so very little work on my Victory. I have been listening to young men speaking “geek” (as bad as learning all the ship terms) and getting totally confused ROTF. The intellect of these guys (some 25 to 30 years old) is off the charts. Super exciting.

Worked on the upper masts and top gallant masts. I am not following the instructions other than to get the measurements correct so I hope “Grants creations” work. WIP so far:

The arrows indicate some of these : I squared off the upper dowels ; used some leftover deck 3x0.5mm planks to make the tresses tree supports on each mast, made the Hallyard and stay block (seen on mizzen) from 2x2 wood ; and used a toothpick for the connection of the top mast to the bottom portion. Hopefully when I put this all together it will make sense.

The top mast diagram being used : Boy I think I will be rigging for yearsRedface.

I know the feeling of being overawed by the new generation - scary! I like the approach that you have of following your ideas based on the info that you have. This is the right way to ensure that you are comfortable with your own build.

Cheers Heinrich. Super good to see you building your WB again. I’m enjoying making up my own ideas to achieve a reasonable outcome based Victory ( if I can call it such) -was fun this morning.

Scary, isn't it Grant? I've been in the IT industry for longer than I care to remember (nearly 40 yrs) and the changes I've seen must be as astronomical as the difference between the age of sail and modern warships. Just when you get your head around one thing they come up with something new. Intelligence for sure, however artificial. Soon we'll be building virtual ship models in cyberspace with make-believe rigging and holographic hull and deck components ROTF

Hello Mark. True story. ROTFThe rapid development in this field is incredible. It is changing how businesses operate for sure- how to use this tech in a rapidly changing environment to ensure the businesses stay ahead of the curve is the challenge for my guys. Loads of work ahead- it is exciting.
Cheers

Good morning. Let me attempt to pull together the work on the upper and top gallant mast work I have been doing.

Base work- The problem area was mainly in the changes to the gap between the squared off portion of the top mast and the lower end of the Top gallant Base. I had to increase the width as I will be seizing the shrouds and they would not fit the kit dimensions. The cap and tressel trees needed adjustments. To get this I used a 2mm+0.5mm spacer and strapped it to the mast. Then glued the top gallant mast and cap. I inserted a small dowel after placement into the cap. Hope this is strong enough.

The only disappointment for me is no matter what I tried I could not make the lower part of the top gallant a hexagon. Left it as per instructions and I am happy with the outcome.

Now I need to fit this to the lower mast- here are the parts. The alignment of this is going to be an interesting challenge for another time. To make it all work I needed to break down each part into individual portions (as I have been showing in this log here and there- I do jump around a lot. )“Eish” a super confusing log this isROTF) .

I do need to do a lot of work fitting blocks, strops, deadeyes etc to these masts so I will only put this all together once this is completed. Stumbling along with no instructions I am....Yoda speak.ROTF

Working with no instructions but many logs and documents that can for sure point you in the right direction :)

Glad I'm retired....remembering the 7 layer OSI model, stuff like TCP/IP, netbios, netbuei, DNS servers and all the other stuff like API's.....glad to be just ship building!

Hello Phil- I think I will stick to ship building as well. I Never really understood IT, just know what I need and get the clever guys and ladies to make it work. I am amazed what is coming out of this industry and I think we are in for a rapid “revolution “ of sorts. I find it exciting to see opportunities happening. More peaceful to build my ship Tho . Cheers Grant

I'm big into computers so I'll keep them as my career and also ship building as my hobby while not behind a screen.

Very precise work on those masts Grant and very neatly executed. You have really mastered the art of painting the mast sections so that they look gorgeous.
