HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

A rather quiet conclusion to an epic build, Grant. My rookie build has some cringeworthy execution and decision making - and you probably feel the same about yours. But I have become a big fan of your work and your approach to building, and I just wanted to share my respect. In my imagination I picture a large workroom shared by like-minded guys building their models in community. Won't ever happen but I would be happy to share a worktable with you in that imaginary space (although the bubble wrap will have to go ROTF).
Good afternoon Paul. Thank you kindly. I really enjoy sharing my shipyard here, my blunders and at time successes together with the learning, banter and friendships. I agree that my rookie build has plenty “cringeworthy “ aspects. I was even considering redoing some areas of my Victory however it won’t be my Rookie build if I do.

The bubble wrap is my secret weapon…. ROTF
I really like the case Grant. It compliments but doesn’t detract from your wonderful build. Great job!
Thank you very much Roger. Your support and encouragement have been most welcome during this project. Cheers Grant
The only word that comes to mind is “AUSGEZEICHNET”. A wonderful home for your build.

Jan
Thank you Jan. I don’t know if is just my Victory but this display case really finishes her off really well. I guess I’m going to have to do one for my Xebec as well.

Cheers Guys

Perfect indeed. You might choose a "subtle looking" stand so that the eyes immediately focus on the ship in its case. Just a thought
I just knew that those stools were to have a temporary life, but they did draw a lot of visual attention.

Cheers,Beer

Good afternoon John. Thank you. Yep the stand will be Arlene’s choice. As this monster can be seen from the lounge I will just say yes Ma’am :D. Cheers Grant

Hello Heinrich. Thanks. I didn’t want to make you miss our town, it was just a beautiful evening. A bit of nostalgia is always good for the soulROTF Yes it was one of those evenings- picnic on beach little windetc etc- you know what I mean.
Grant: Were there chain plates provided with the kit, were they an after-market purchase or were they scratch built? If after-market, who did you purchase them from? I need some for my cross-sect. and the ones supplied with the Corel kit are not right.

Good morning. my Victory chain plates are a combination of kit products and wire I used. They are not 100% accurate. Here is a more accurate representation (Caldercraft model) and the real ship:

Thanks Grant. And thanks for the photos. I have found "sets" similar to yours and what is on the real ship from a Dry Dock and Cornwall but each source is out of stock of the 5mm size I need. Cornwall does have the "Admiral's Lantern in stock. I have plenty to work on while waiting for stock replenishment. I have the topsail and topgallant yards to prep, the main top needs the aft railing, etc. I am glad that I kept the 15 pages of plans from my Mamoli kit as they have been a valuable resource for correcting Corel's errors. The most glaring one is how short the hull is. As such, I only have room for two shrouds on each side the main mast. I have sent Model Expo a note asking if they can get one half of the hull section from Corel. If they and I can get this, I can cut it in half and extend the model's length by a few scale feet. This would require adding 6 more cannons (which I have several of) and feathering in decking and hull planking. After my hammock rail dries, I'll send you a photo of where I am in the build....

The hull halves are not long enough to install a full set of dead eyes.

I still cannot picture this. There were 13 deadeyes on the main mast channel and 2 on the small channel just aft of it . With room for only two shrouds this will be a very strange looking ship. :( I cropped the1765 profile plan for Victory to leave only two deadeyes for the mainmast shrouds and came up with the picture below. I am sure I did not get this right. It would also reduce her to a second rate from a first rate.
