HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good morning Bill. I posted this on my Xebec log but thought I would add it here too :

Thank you Heinrich.

Good morning Roger. It was a beautiful Cape Town day and evening sort of fitting for the occasion, but no waves, calm as a lake. Next time Heinrich we can go for a paddle ;)

Good morning Peter. That’s what makes SOS special. We would all be welcomed around the world

That we did Tobias

Good morning Jan. Thanks. Was a very enjoyable evening.

True story

Good morning Shota, (@shota70 ), Jack (@Jack Sparrow )Bryian ( @Bryian ), Gilbert (@Gilbertm ), Paul (@Paul132 ), Dean (@Dean62 ), @lakedaisy , @ConsNZ Thank you all very much.
Cheers Grant
Amazing Vic and...nice jacket there...!

OK THAT DIDNT WORK ROTF . Even worse is the gold leaf did not come off when soaked in hot water and the heat warped the 3D plastic…. Oh well I have to get the port side so I will have to get two more now.

I have dry fitted the sad looking entrance way so long…..It is an improvement of the original Mantua parts and my painting tho.

140 pages of the review, it’s hard to get through it all. I’ll gradually review it. By the way, I also want to suspend the lifeboat so it doesn't obstruct the view of the deck. I might not make all the oars, but I will definitely make one to suspend. And maybe I'll place another one next to the model. It will have oars instead of another full sail. But that’s still theoretical. I need to finish the ship first! Ship-1

Good afternoon.
Not much shipyard time of late- have to do some work every once in a while;).

I have been attempting to make a display case for Grants Victory - more of a clown show than anything else :p. Ran out of swear jarsROTF.

It is rather large. 1500mm x 900mm x 600mm. I did get a proper woodwork chap to cut/bevel the groves in the base for the glass.

I used metal supports and my soldering was a tad sketchy:

Luckily this won’t be visible due to the height.

Putting this cover on was a mission…..a family affair- all 4 of us.

The Admiral will not allow the bar stools to remain. We are going to have to by a decent desk or something.

Lessons learned:

What not to do when making a display case for a large model:
1. Use glass. A non reflective plexi-glass is a must. It is not so noticeable when viewed but very noticeable in the photos
2. Make a “fish tank” design. It would be better to have one panel with hinges to open to remove and inset the ship.

Cheers Grant

Very nice Grant
But I imagine the weight of the glass tank !!!

Я пытался представить случай победы над грантами - больше клоунского шоу, чем что-либо еще :p. Ran out of swear jarsROTF.

Он довольно большой. 1500 мм x 900 мм x 600 мм. Я получил нормального парня по дереву, чтобы срезать / скосить рощи в основании для стекла.

I covered the glass with a museum film with an ultraviolet filter. It protects from fading and glare. Organic glass cannot be compared with ordinary glass. It has distortions, so you did the right thing by choosing glass. And to avoid glare in the photo, use a polarizing filter on the camera and there will be no glare. An excellent display case. Yes, a door is more practical. But hermeticity is more important! Moisture is bad for wood. But overall, it's beautiful!

Yep it's huge and looks fantastic, great job.

I note your lessons learned if I ever produce something worthy to put on display.

Beautiful work! Reminds me that I need to get back to my ship building....

When I built a case for my USS 'Connie' from wood & Acrylic sheet, I made the front panel removable for access to her. I started on a similar case for Montanes, but realised it would be far too big to sit in front of my disused fireplace, where she sits now.

Beautiful display case Grant. It is a real complement to your awesome ship.
What a beautiful display! The complexity of the model contrasts the simplicity of the case. Perfect.
It is simply fascinating to see this impressive model of yours and it has been given a great home.

Thanks for the tips. Maybe be worthwhile at a later stage or future cases to include the film. Well my ship (unintentionally) definitely won’t get much moisture.
Great job Grant! Good idea to protect her and keep dust off.

Note - another lesson, when we build these big ships, display and location tends to be an afterthought! ROTF
Thanks Dean. True story. Rookie ship and rookie display case - never thought where this monster would go.
Very nice Grant
But I imagine the weight of the glass tank !!!
Thanks Gilbert. Yep it is rather heavy. The wood base is also 30mm which in itself was rather heavy.
My daughter wants me to make one for her Soleil Royal. I think it will even be bigger than yours. And plexiglass isn’t cheap. Did your case cost almost as much as the ship?
Hi Vic. I must say it finishes off the model really well. As Justin said it makes it look very impressive. I have not added up all the cost but around R4000.00 - $230.

Hi Stuart. It’s funny - after I built the case I thought I had got all my measurements wrong as it looked too big. My ship just fits in….it’s amazing how long the bowsprit and wide the main yard is.

Grants Victory can now be called completed. Rookie ship and rookie case- I had loads of fun and learnt plenty building this Victory.

Cheers Grant

A rather quiet conclusion to an epic build, Grant. My rookie build has some cringeworthy execution and decision making - and you probably feel the same about yours. But I have become a big fan of your work and your approach to building, and I just wanted to share my respect. In my imagination I picture a large workroom shared by like-minded guys building their models in community. Won't ever happen but I would be happy to share a worktable with you in that imaginary space (although the bubble wrap will have to go ROTF).
