Is this right or has Occre screwed up?

I have written instructions in 5 languages, as well as the pictures, OcCre also have their own chanel on YouTube where you can watch the full build.
In answer to your other problem refference the rear gun ports, this it somewhat of a degree is a mistake of OcCre, the Beagle did have these ports whan it was built, but in the refurbishment before Darwin's trip they were planked over, see attached drawing.

Yep, I'm finding that too, especially that there are no written instructions, just pictures to follow that are often in the wrong order. For example, the planking of the stern is particularly confusing as the pictures show this...

Yet I've had to do this...

Hi Odd Job, in the picture above you have 6 planks on the lower transom, the picture in the instructions is a little confusing, but what it shows is only 4 planks, with the last one tapering off to nothing, all to be hidden with the second planking.

Hopefully the second planking will still work OK and the extra 2 mm on the first planking will not be noticed. Thanks for your help.

So, are you going to plank over those hatches simulating them sealing them up for creating a Brig and having an overlay in a layer showing it, or outer planking them so they can't be seen at all (as far as them being eliminated altogether) or placing hatches over ports showing those cannon ports are actually closed?
Just wondering and I wish to make this as my next build, hence, me including my comments in this thread.

The Beagle was modified for exploratory use in 1832 (? from memory). The main deck was raised about a foot to provide more height for rough seas and cabins were added. The forwardmost gunport and aftmost gunports were sealed because of the cabins built behind them. They were apparently still painted as if they were active; but they were not accessible for use. I assume this was for "shock and awe" optics even though one would assume it might have been more structurally sound to have just planked them over in the modification/retrofit. The Beagle as outfitted for Darwin's journeys was not well documented.

I've started planking my Beagle but something is not right. The fore and aft gun ports are in inaccessible places with the aft ports having a wall directly behind them. Do I cover them with planking or leave as is?View attachment 575481View attachment 575482View attachment 575483
Looking at other builds I think your interpretation is correct. Other pictures show the bulkhead through the cannon port the same as yours. So I guess you put a cannon port lid over the hole?? Cover up OcCre's poor design.
As we say, it's only wood and string, you can do anything you want to remedy their error, but this would have to be done at a suitable stage of the build. You have progressed too far to correct this so the best option is to put a lid over it.
OcCre are a popular manufacturer. I never understood why, in my view they are filed under Eurotrash along with Sergal, Corel, AL, Mamoli....in fact most makes from Cornwall Model Boats. The planking in the photo instructions is fifth rate. Any kit that recommends the simple planking as opposed to proper tapering and fitting is fit for serious kit bashing only, using the parts as a guide and building according to your own research. I wouldn't get anything else from OcCre, but then most of their choices are unpleasant looking ships anyway, Beagle being the only attractive one. However, take some comfort in the knowledge that it's OcCre's fault, not yours! In the meantime check out some other available kits. Amati Victory line is pretty reasonable, double planked with a 1.5 inner and a 1mm outer layer which avoids using the awful half ml veneer. Also they use a tapered planking technique. Drydock and Vanguard offer far better kits as well.
All the makes named above, my Eurotrash list!, Use simple kit fake planking. Avoid.
Lady Nelson from Amati is a straightforward little build for you to check out plank tapering and fitting.
Watch Olha Batchvarov's youtube videos. it's worth paying to become a member so you can get the instructional videos (Not all the builders on youtube know what they are doing! Many offer very poor advice) Keep us posted with updates. Good luck.

I'm not familiar with this kit, but could it be that the bit of wood was just there to guide the planking and should be removed? Most of the Sergal kits I've built have those sorts of things in the midship area as a guide to building up the bulkhead. You don't glue the planking to them and remove them before doing the deck planking.

No, it's the cabin bulkheads below the quarterdeck. They can't be removed, they're part of the design with doorways etc.
