K63 HMS Picotee 1941 1/48 scale early short forecastle Flower Class Corvette

Just a quick update on the dreaded rails and stanchions, I have now finished all on the starboard side and about to start the port side. These rails are turning into one of the biggest single expenses in this build. The stanchions undoubtedly look better bought than the ones I make but they cost 75 pence (1$) each and I am well over the one hundred already! These big scale ships aren't cheap, but they are fun to build.

Cheers JJ..

Stanchions and railings … these ships easily have over 100 stanchions. The brass ones are lovely, but would be way too expensive.

Dus you build a jig? It’s all fiddly with the horizontals vs the evenly spaced verticals.

Just measure them out on a piece of scrap wood and pray.

From what I see now, the stanchions were a good investment, Jack. Nice overall pictures with all the details.

Good morning Jack. I expect nothing less from you anymore…..she is beautiful. Those stanchions are worth the spend for sure. Cheers Grant

Good morning, I have now , with a little gritting of teeth and not a few words to the big man up above, fitted all the rails on the port side. I don't know how others do it but I like to add detail in layers, never totally finishing one area before the next catches up, so for this area that completes layer two of four (I hope). The boat davits and assorted fittings will be L3. I was considering showing one of the boats swung out but having done that on Sir Kay I feel it ruins the symmetry so won't bother. The sounding machine is sitting where it should be, but I am at a loss to see where the sounding boom, ( 3" dia. and 12 foot six inches long) sits. I cannot see it in my photograph of Picotee and the Lambert plans of Alisma ( built by H&W at the same time as K63) ignore it.
Of course to contradict what I have just said about layers the forecastle is so far barely past L1, my excuse is that I have to add the mast and its fittings first and that will be next on the agenda. (I am really looking forward to the fifty odd rung rope ladder!).

Some pics..

It looks like you are taking pictures of a new ship actually being constructed. (Which, in a way, is exactly what it is!)

To use a way too much and most often falsely used expression: epic!

About finishing: funny how we somehow try to find a process that makes sense. You use L, I have C(compartment). And as with you, I often deviate. But at least it keeps one (more or less) sane.

About rung rope ladders: I see some stunning examples and recognise the "fun" it will be.

Question: that beautiful and fully detailed boat ... did you create that from scratch? Or is it a 3D print? I seem to remember that on Sir Kay you did it all by hand ...

Great new details, Jack.

I have the same question? Because I have to make a bit similar boat for my Balder.

Hi Rob, The good thing is, although none that I have found of Picotee, there lots of photos of flowers to work from. Then its just a matter of coping them.

Cheers JJ..

Sadly Marco not this time, the boats are the same as the unfinished ones shown a few posts ago and used to set the correct position of the chocks and davits. They where made by Mark of the highly originally named 'Marks Model Bits' and cost £5 each, too tempting rather than all that hard work;).

Getting lazy in my old age. JJ..

Not so much lazy, more like ever more accurate understanding of effort vs gains.
