Hello Friends!

I've begun working on the upper deck: beams, carlings, ledges, lodging knees, and hanging knees (these are being scratch built as they were not part of the kit offerings).

Progress has been understandably slow as there are lots of pieces in motion and each one needs to be carefully fit into place. I'm not digging the horrific matching of the layers of the carlings, but it was getting to the point that I wasn't using ANY of the kit parts and that started to feel like a big waste...

Lodging knees are the horizontal braces:

And hanging knees are each custom matched to the hull shape at each beam location (these will be added closer to final installation of the deck):

I'm now going to move to the back of the ship and work forward. There is a place near midships where it will be easy to hide any creep/discrepancy/builder error.

I also need to do the final installation of the lower deck rooms/walls and other details. That will inform how many more ledges (the athwartship slender sticks) I will be adding. I'm trying to balance interesting deck details with a view of the interesting below-deck details.

Thanks for checking in on me!
Paul, hello!
It looks like you used overlays, the tone of the wood is different. When you cover it with oil, the contrast will be even greater.

You are absolutely correct Sasha. I chose to use the parts that came with the kit for these carlings. I wish I could say that the layers are more evident in the photos than they are in real life - but that's not true :(.

Hi,
Maybe you already mentioned it, but what is the kind of wood you are using?
Hello Cap'n. The entire kit is boxwood (not real European boxwood, but a related species). And I am using the same species of wood for the scratch build parts (most everything you have seen except for the frames - and now the upper deck construction).

interesting. I would have thought it would have been better to install the hanging knees as you installed the deck beams.

Lovely pictures, especially the one looking top down.
Considering that countless details are going to be hardly visible when you put aside all your fancy tools, I realized you’re still lacking a very critical tool:

Making scratch build details gives a lot of satisfaction. And that the progress of the build is going slow: who cares, Paul? I don’t, just more time to enjoy your ‘slow cooking’ process.
Regards, Peter

It's always a pleasure to see new updates from you, amazing work Paul. I agree with @WojtasS , you have it in your blood.
Thank you, Tobias. This hobby does check a lot of boxes for me: working with my hands, problem solving, research, artistry, seeing the natural beauty of wood in a decorative/functional piece, chasing after the details...

Of course, today I'm off to try to repair the fan on an AC unit at one of my buildings. This does NOT check any of my boxes, but it should be too small of a job to hire out. We'll see.

Piękna praca Pawle. Kolana i początek pokładu świetne. Jesteś prawdziwym artystą . Pozdrawiam Mirek
Thank you kindly, Mirek!

Agreed. Scratch building, or improving upon the kit offerings, is the cherry on the sundae. Very satisfying!

I spent most of the day yesterday trying to get (only) 3 beams with their associated carlings to fit properly at the back of the ship. What do we call it when 'slow cooking' gets slower ROTF?

holy cow! what is that monster for?lol

They are the shipwrights, if you can still refer to them as such, who are scrupulously cutting up their models.
I once considered to go down the same road, but I admittedly lost my nerve…

I wouldn't be able to do that either. wow.

Nice progress again Paul, guess you wil plank this deck on SB side only?

Hmm. Not sure how much planking there will be on this ship. I need to see what it all looks like once the deck parts are installed. The further I progress on the build the more elements I am thinking I will leave off.

I’ll be honest, I really don’t know what I’m doing.
