I am finally about ready to begin my Constitution build. One question...,.The "Laser burn" on the edge of the wooden pieces???? Can it be cemented to or shoukld it be removed by sanding before construction begins. I am a true beginner at thgis, as you can tell. Thanks

Hi Howard, if I were you I would remove those unsightly laser marks. On the one hand for optical reasons and on the other hand the glue cannot penetrate the wood very well or not at all at this point. Over time it can happen that this connection dissolves again. Do you intend to create a protocol, that would be nice to see.

we have several posts on glue however finding them in the thousands of posts is a challenge

go to search and type glue

i did find this one

Thanks for the info. I will definitely remove the laser marks. And thanks for the info on the the glue. Not sure if I will do a build log yet. This will definitely be a very long build. I am 83 and have a wife with dementia to care for, so limited time to play/

As Dave Stevens of the lumberyard taught me - it is best to use a single-edge razor blade and scrape back and forth (gently) - this way you will have a flat surface. If you use sanding paper, the odds are that you will have rounded edges, unless you have a hard sanding block. But even with that, it is easy to tilt the block.
I understand about dementia - my Mother had it along with Alzheimer's.
I would encourage you to do a Build Log anyway. This site is all about the complete beginner just starting out to advanced modelers that can help in case you have any more questions.

So, what brand (manufacture) of Constitution do you have - since there are so many of them?

Thanks Donnie. I can see that the razor blade is much better than the rotary sander I was planning on using, especially since my habds are not as steady as they used to be. I have the Model Shipways kit. Looks like it will be a challenge for sure. I have a very small work area so will be forced to keep it orderly; especially since I share the work area with the "Admiral" and our Grandaughter. My wife is an artist and the Granddaughter uses it as a study area for her college classes. I will give some thought to a build log, but will do some research on SOS tutorials first to see if I think I can master the computer skills to do it. Thanks gopr yopur encouragement. This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time.

Howard,
you choose a great kit from Model Shipways. If you have any questions, please ask. I or someone will help as we can. I am sure that maybe your Granddaughter can help with some computer stuff. Just grab a camera and at least try to start taking pictures of your progress.

Will do, and you are correct about the grandaughter. I call on her often to help with my computer, Iphone, Ipad, Apple watch, etc. I would be lost without her. HA!!!!! I will do as you say and give it a try.

Laser char. In my experience one does not need to sand or scrape away all char on a part. I only sand away char when the charred edge will be on open display. But then even that situation has exceptions…I have left char in place on parts where the edge is viewed and coated the part with matte poly…the charred edge now becomes nice weathering. I have not experienced any issues gluing to charred edges with one exception (again). If the charred edge has a char residue I then sand it away where the glue is applied. You can discern if there is char residue by wiping the edge with a cloth. Otherwise I do not generally try to remove the char…

My iPhone tech support is my 6 year old great granddaughter. I have to be patient because she goes to bed early.
