Le Requin-Zebec-1750 POF 1:48 (ZHL)

Here is a little more progress. I framed out the ships main access to its lower cargo hold.

The notched longitudinal backbone supporting the center of each deck beam stops about 6 cm from the stem post in the bow area. There is not much detail I can find related to the deck beams in this area so after filling in all the other deck beams, I will come back and concentrate at the bow.

Depending on the lighting this pearwood can look like it has been soaked in dirty water and sometimes it looks ok. It's all sanded smooth so far and it will all be covered. I'm grateful the decking pear looks pretty good. Each board in the decking is laser cut as shown in the last picture so they will all be separated and laid down individually.

Thanks for looking in, till next time hope you all have great success.
Good morning Daniel. Oooh La La she is looking good. The wood is a bit like my Cherry (also Chinese kit) which I found very difficult to get a clean look. I scrapped mine more than sanded and then polished it with a dremel tool just before applying poly. If I leave it for a few days before putting poly on it darkens again.... Anyway looking very impressive. Cheers Grant

About the deck board with the ‘flames’. You wrote that after sanding it was covered.
Hello Peter, I may have inadvertently created some confusion in my post. My deck boards actually look great to me; they have a nice consistent coloration sort of yellowish bronze look. I was referring to all the other structural members, the frames (sometimes I refer to them as ribs), and the deck beams will be or are already sanded smooth, look dark and what I call splotchy which is another term for being covered with irregular patches or spots of color. What is interesting even though I ordered the Pear wood version of this ship the decking actually looks like some other species of wood, at least it does not look like any of the other wood in the kit.

Hi Grant, interesting observation about the wood on your ship. If I take a photo of say the deck beams straight on looking down 90 degs. the wood looks like a dark splotchy mess but if I get back and shoot the same area at a slight upper angle it looks bright and much much cleaner. Anyway, like I mentioned before I'm looking forward to big wide beautiful fully decked surface with maybe a small area cut out for looking down into. On the ships side I will have a long oval view port to look into.

I got out a piece each of wood from the cherry longboat kit and the pear long boat kit. I then sanded the backs of both of those plus the back of one of the pieces in the Requin. When I compared them, it seems to me this kit is made of cherry. Now keep in mind it's the Shicheng kit, not the Luhaiqingkong one, which Daniel has. That said, it doesn't look like Daniel's is cherry, but I still am not sure if it's it's pear. The color of the grains doesn't seem as uniform. Daniel, I agree that they may have soaked in something. Well, it doesn't look bad, it's still a beautiful kit. Once you decide on how to finish it, I'm sure it'll pop.

Hey Rob, looking at the comparisons here I would say my ships wood is not cherry. This photo is a sample of the woods I have supposidly all pear. Everything except the arch pieces is laser cut and there is a significant variation in color.

Compared to the pear in your picture above mine looks dirty.
