Make your rope on a rope walk

I just found this on YouTube - the ULTIMATE rope making! I've no idea how to link it, but the title is:-
Heavy Duty Rope Fabricating Production - Wire Cable Manufacturing.

To me the Domanoff's rope making tool is good enough and serves all my purposes. Horizontal rope making tools look too complicated (and expensive) for me.

I have a self-built ropewalk out in my workshop, but in bad weather & winter it's too cold out there, so I looked to making a vertical one to use indoors, it worked out to be not worth my effort, so I ordered one. It's 'post free' from Poland, plus whatever charges HM customs throw at it!

Here you can see the new machine in action. I had to improvise a bit because my line track is suitable for my other machine, so I had to raise some things to make sure the KLOS would hang in the middle. But at least you can see the machine in action. You can clearly see that turning up the rope pushes the KLOS forward. Everything works by itself. The sound is because it is a machine with gears. They make more noise. This makes them more reliable with winding.
I also took some pictures to show how things are set up and the 3D printer is busy with the next one.

I placed my order on 27th June, it was delivered 16th July, and, wonder of wonders, there were no extra charges! Full marks all round :D .Exclamation-Mark

Order of 3. After this order I have to charge a little more. Some printed parts are changed and contain more filament. They are also longer to print. You can also choose between 3000 or 6000 turns a minute. After these 3 I will only make 2 more and then I will stop building these machines. The other hobby calls me to often and I want to start working on the PW and the sails again. Thanks for those who ordered the machine and please let me know how it works. It was a pleasure to do.

When I see horizontal rope making machines for miniature ship modelers I always wonder why not to use vertical ones instead. They all look so much simpler. What are the advantages of horizontal versus the vertical machine? Is it only that horizontal machines use the same process as a real life ones?

The only ones I know that have a clear advantage are these types with a take up spool. You can make ropes as long as your spool. I have made ones about 20-25 feet long before as a test.

What are the advantages of horizontal versus the vertical machine?
Personally, my highest point I could attach a vertical machine would only allow me to make less than 8’ of rope. With my horizontal setup I can make about 12’ (~4 meters) of rope. I’m sure if I wanted to I could make about 20’ (~7 meters) in lengths. Other than that, vertical vs horizontal seems to be a personal choice.

The advantage of a horizontal machine is, that you can walk and don't have to climb when you go above the 2,5 meters.
And most of us are old guys with a lot of old age symptoms......

But it gives also a better result when making rope with a lot of yarns. There is much more control on the horizontal version. With the designed machine I made it is possible to control more parameters. You can make rope with more turns/cm, stiffer or just looser rope. With a horizontal machine you are also not limited in the length. In house you can go to 10-13 meters (the weight need to go up to the ceiling about 22% of the lenght of the distance between both parts.)
Outside or with a very high ceiling (put the weight outside the window when you work on the second floor) you can go longer. With a vertical you need a high building and walk the stairs up and down a lot. Good training that's for sure.
