Mantua Sergal's Cutty Sark

This is the state of the Cutty after 175 hours and over 450 parts. The grates, hatch and crew quarters all have mitered 2 mm surrounds. The grates have 0.8 mm spacing and are made of cherry. I just got all the parts to start the Sovereign and just bought the Billing's Titanic (1st build priority). Thus, I will have 3 ships in progress.Cutty007a.JPGCutty008a.JPGCutty009a.JPG

Re: Mantua Cutty Sark

<t>No. I will be doing the deck planking on all three decks, cutting the freeing ports, adding the white trim, building the pig pens, chicken coops, paint locker installing dead-eyes on the main rail, building the pin rails and installing belaying pins. I will assemble the other buildings, assemble boats, and probably then will start the copper plates.</t>

Looks great Gary! <br/>

I love that stage when the first paint goes on. It changes your project suddenly from just the model to the ship. I also look forward to the first of your deck planking.

Looking very nice Gary. I built the Artesania Latina Scottish Maid as my second or third model. Unfortunately, I believe that kit was discontinued, and I gave it away to a friend when I moved from California to Montana, so I have no pictures of the finished kit, but I loved that there were no armanent, and the hull was quite sharp as I remember it.

Very true John. She had good lines. If you read my comments, you know I have several items on order to bring this model somewhat back to a good kit like it was originally produced in the early 80's.

Yes, I have read them and good on you. In this case you are thinking well ahead, as you should, and with experience, we can generally anticipate what we will need to make the kit "OUR" kit. I myself have purchased additional parts that would look better than what is supplied with the kit. With the Montanes, if you remember, I totally threw away those awful, terrible metal gun carriages and scratch built all of gun carriages out of wood, which made me quite happy, plus they make the model look a whole lot better.

I have to hand it to the folks that can build more than one ship. I have enough stamina just to do one ! By the way, I remember building the plastic version of this when I was about 20 to 21 years old. Of course, I knew nothing - absolutely nothing about ships, terms, rigging. Somehow it got built. It was the larger Revell box - as it was about 24" if I could remember. In the back of my mind, I have always wanted to go back and build another one, except do it in wood.

Looks great just like any other model you build Gary.

Be nice to see you pick-up on this one Gary when the time is right. I have a very lasting memory of school trip to see the Cutty Sark as a child. There was a group consensus that any such trip would be boring and we as children should act accordingly. In reality the whole experience blew my mind and perhaps has more than a little to do with why I am taking up ship modeling now in my 50's. :D : I can still remember standing at the bottom of the masts thinking, wow, did people really go up there while this huge thing was out on the high seas, total awe at the whole concept of sailing ships that never left me.

Something I'm not doing right because I see no pictures here what so ever. Can somebody give me a hnt as to how I go about this?
For me it is working.......check shortly, if at post #21 are three photos visible? This is the last post in the thread with a photo

HI Uwe. Yes I got those three but back further where people say"That looks great" there are no pictures. Look at posts #12 and #13. I'm thinkin' some pics are missing maybe? Just curious.

We had a forum crash last year and some images got corrupted ,thast the reason images are missing.

Thanks for that Zoltan. I can see that alright as I've had the same problem several times in the last couple of years. Just wanted to be sure I was doing this right.
