Mary Rose "Your Noblest Shippe" 1545 scale 1/50

No,
I used to be a military model builder.
But I got a bit tired of it. That's why I only make wooden ships now.
I also like painting miniature figures (most of them tin) but my eyes are getting worse throughout the years, building has also been a hobby of mine, picked up one i started in 73 as i saw the completed model at baillien and was impressed by the finished look (the pergrine galley by Sergal, I still have the original kit with the metallic parts, nowadays they are all wooden)

grtz,
Chris

The bottom of the bulwark was finished first.

Then painted

And now work has started on the final jigsawpuzzle

Thank you all for following and the nice comments.

Pencil preparations for painting.

After contacting the Mary Rose Museum, it turns out that my two forged cannons are much too heavy for this lightly constructed deck.

Presumably, one or two light "sakers" were positioned here.

This part will therefore only be continued after reading some new info first.

Luckily it’s not to late to make this changes, Patrick. And it’s always nice to have such contact with the museum.
And I also do like that ‘irregular’ deck planking.
Regards, Peter

The front of the rearcastle is largely painted, though not yet entirely to my liking.

The two openings on the deck have been finished all around.

And now the shields on the mid-deck. A first impression. As usual, nothing identical...

To be able to glue these shields between the 2 beams, some adjustments are needed first. Not historically accurate, but so be it.

Didn't they use real shields for that Patrick? Like on the Gokstad but than square not round.
No, not here.
On the Anthony drawing, there are beautifully painted shields in this location. On the ship itself, these were rectangular wooden panels.

On the original version, most were removable to give archers a clear field.
On the improved version, some of the shields were even simply nailed down. With a few remaining removable.

It is also not certain whether they were painted or not.

A propos, hoe gaat het al met je?

Okay, these ships where illustrated in the book of Peter Kirsch. So not every ship got shields, good to know.

Thanks for asking. Aside from a few minor issues, things are actually going pretty well. I worked on my stern decoration again today. It's actually quite a challenging little project and a real time-sucker—it's moving along very slowly. I wasn't in the mood for ropes and sails right now, so I decided to do some cutting work again; that's always fun to do.
