"Mayflower" Yuanqing models

You're right. Dark stripes on the oak. Oak on the left. Alder on the right. They have the paneling from the kit on them.

I spent a long time drawing the deck layout. I based it on a 30-foot plank length. I don't like anything. Only this option. The replica is similar. Three planks apart. The black is the rooster lattice.

I got a bit of criticism for the deck. Probably rightly so. I practiced with a different imitation caulking. I'll redo it with cardboard. I did a bit of work on the boat while the glue was drying. Something like that.

Did the criticism come from your Russian colleagues, Alex? I have noticed there are regional preferences for certain aspects of ship modeling.

Personally I much prefer your earlier examples. To me the caulking is overdone on the final proposal. But since we know very little about a ship like the Mayflower (as built) you are really free to choose your own adventure.

I am with the same opinion... Deck #3 shown above look nice. The caulking is just right to me. A baseboard at the intersection of the wall and everything else are good (even a 1x1mm board will do). Keep in mind that finishing, especially with oil, will enhance caulking a little more. Oil darkens end-grain/side more than flat area. With poly, it will look pretty much the same. your preference. Here finishing with Linseed oil (before and after):

There was criticism about the outer planks near the waterway. There really shouldn't be any sharp ends to the planks there. Regarding the thickness of the caulking. Currently, the planking is about 6.05 mm thick. With the cardboard glued on, it's about 6.35 mm. So, in scale, the caulking width is 14.4 mm. Not much for a real ship.
