Finished coppering the hull and then mounted on a temporary base. It is important not to use a cradle as it will damage the plates. The thin wood strip is a "wood guard" added at the water line as noted in the Whaling Museum plans. Next step is to finish the rudder, hinges, and give the copper a good cleaning before airbrushing a coat of Dullcote lacquer.

This stage of the build was very time consuming and I am anxious to start on the deck structures.

Hi Quint, was contemplating whether I should do the Hull of the Bounty, I hope to build, and then I saw your workmanship. Absolutely, put me in the direction of giving it a go. The originality I see of the copper sheathing you have done has really brought it on. However, where do you get the Copper tape from?
 
GaryA. Model Expo sells 1/4" wide tape which may work for your scale. I've bought tape a couple of times on EBay which oddly enough is the same tape sold by Model Expo! Here's a link to the last roll I bought. 3M also makes copper tape. Originally, back in the 80"s when I first coppered a hull the foil sold by Model Shipways was non adhesive. Unfortunately, it's not available to the hobbyist anymore here. If you can find some it will save a lot of prep work.

Also try stained glass outlets, such as Delphi. Might be cheaper there. Not sure.
 
Some clarification on the Kate Cory whaleboats, there's no right or wrong design. The kit plans offer little detail regarding the whaleboats and notes they did not have a centerboard. Nor do they show any detail regarding a rudder. Kate Cory plans from the New Bedford Whaling Museum provide no detail about the whaleboats. The ship has four whaleboats, three working and one spare carried at the stern, which was not painted, simply primed "white" which was the custom when delivered to the buyer.

As I went through my research material it became increasingly confusing and difficult to pick "one" design. The book "The Whaleboat by Ansel" contains a great amount of detail and options, for example note the variations in rudder and lions tongue designs in the photo. The book also notes that whaleboat design was constantly evolving, earlier versions did not contain items like "peak cleats", there are numerous mast head design variations, etc. So, obviously, there is no one design. Consequently, I decided to use an old set of Marine Model New Bedford Whaleboat plans a basis to build a prototype.

Making progress with the whaleboats. Completed one boat as a prototype before moving on to the others. Will now add the rudder, sail and gear. Thanks to Tom Lauria for posting his YouTube videos, many helpful tips, specially making oar locks. Also, will try his sail making technique.
