I’m happy with the detail on these.

On the ship…

I think they will look good once finished. Now I have to decide on the cannon color…black or gold?
I know the movie “……. Golden Gun’, but golden cannon’s ……. My option would be black, Dean.
Regards, Peter

Since I modeled these cannon carriages myself, I checked the fit of the barrel and the height of the quoin to ensure the barrel was level, and finally the carriage with barrel height in opening on ship…and both are as planned. My math was good! ;)

You can see the brass turned barrels provided in the kit. Looks like I can blacken them and then dry brush some metal color on the black for a realistic look.

Those will be some good-looking carriage sets Dean. Is it just me or does the canon look like it is sitting too far forward in the carriage?
Thanks, I designed them to use the provided barrels. The trunnion holes in them are what I have to use as far as the location goes. I also used the kit provided carriages as a reference. So I think they are correct.

Some images…

As you can see, due to different cannon sizes and barrel types along with the different carriages, I have seen too many variations to know if there is a norm?
It seems to me the location of the trunnion on the cannon determines how it is located in the carriage. I think my cannons have the trunnion holes further back indicating it was a long barrel. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can chime in?

Today I added the wood trim pieces to the lower arches above the columns on the upper galley piece.

I cut them to length and then soaked and bent them and they were then super glued on while damp. Then I painted them. Next I have to make floral carvings for the upper arches…should be fun!
Your combination of hand carving and 3D printing is outstanding!

Thank you Daniel!
I was going to carve the handrails and had pieces of pearwood cut to size for them. But then I got the resin printer and decided to try to model and print them as an experiment. It went so well I used them, and the rest is history. Honestly speaking, I am glad it happened the way it did, because there is no way I could have carved them that consistently. ;)
Gotta agree with Daniel...
Thanks Paul!

Today I worked on the upper carving…
IMG_2373.jpeg
This is the right side, it’s too big to do as one piece. I trimmed the upper profile and once close I use files to finish. That way if any chips occur, they can be filed off.
IMG_2374.jpegIMG_2375.jpeg
Then the bottom profile was done.

After that I sanded off the paper pattern and carved the floral border to be 3D. And then it was glued on and painted. I had to soak it in hot water and bend it prior to gluing.

This is one half, I think it will look better once both halves are on. So for now, I am indifferent . ;)
Also, once all the other pieces are added I will paint it the darker color to match the other carvings.

That's really beutiful, Dean, outstanding. I did some carving on my first attempt to build this ship, many years ago. I had more simple tools, but better eyes at that time, I think

That’s a very good effort Krister. I had originally planned to carve it as one piece, but now I am adding each element individually. I think that way is better and allows you the opportunity for do overs! ;)

Yes, that's right. But it's also a big difference in material. Back in those days this "bow" was made from Abachi, but today it's made from plywood and not that easy to carv in. I would never even start thinking about carving in it today, alternative is to do it like you did or use the plastic part delivered with the kit. I'm gonna use the plastic part, I've already painted it gold.

Yes, I have some Pearwood and I was going to carve that piece and bend and glue it on the plywood, just like the plastic piece is added. But I decided to carve each piece individually out of Pearwood. I like the way it carves, so I’m using it even thought it’s being painted.

Upper left side carving is done…a little variation, but that’s normal and I may carve a little more on it, but just some minor adjustments.

Then I painted…really like this look.

There is still so much to do on the stern!
I need to finish all of the individual pieces up top, then a side figure carving, two more carvings for the ship name plaque, etc. and then the rudder and chains and hinges, and the rear cannon doors and hinges. And also the lanterns. Geez! No wonder I took a break…lol. Then I still have to resume the beaks head and detail on the bow. Then cannons and deck furnishings can begin in earnest. Oh well, not running out of stuff to do any time soon! ROTF
