Nuestra Senora del Pilar by Occre - Build log

If you have any comments, ideas or suggestions, please post them.
I assume 'your balls' are metal pellets? If yes, then use Super Blue from Birchwood (same as Brass Black) but designed for steel. Unless they are (the balls) made of stainless steel, it will not work.

I have bluing and brass black. But unsure of the type of metal they are. I guess I could try one but I have them painted now. As an aside, left over from my reloading days, I have a bag of lead birdshot that just about the same diameter of the cannon balls in the kit.
then you should try 'bluing' the resulting patina is just what is should be, IMHO

Build Log Nuestra Senora del Pilar (OcCre 1:46):

Continuing my log with some of the smaller details of the build. So....I ask the question: Have you ever painted your balls??? Cannon balls that is. I have a call to install 135 of them around two of the grates and they need to be blackish. In thinking of the best way to paint them, I came up with a solution of cutting two long, shallow grooves in a scrap of plywood. Using a micro carving 'V' chisel made this easy. Then I mounted the cannon balls. After which I spray painted the first side with a dark matte finish. The second side will be done tomorrow after the first application has had plenty of time to dry. It will dry a flat dark grey. I am trying to include most of the steps I take in building this galleon for a complete build log. If you have any comments, ideas or suggestions, please post them.

The mention of chisels and balls in one post just made me shiver... Sick

Very good looking, Phil. The colors and wood tones are most attractive!

Continuing on with the build - this time the rudder. Planked the rudder (it is plywood to start) with sapele. Then I had to manufacture the hinges. That included cutting 5/32" brass tubing to short lengths to make hinge barrels. I silver soldered the tubing pieces to the brass hinge plates. Then they had to be filed level. This was followed by soldering pins in for each hinge set. The rudder first had the hinges installed with small brass nails, followed by placing the rudder assemblyView attachment 335185View attachment 335186View attachment 335187View attachment 335188View attachment 335189View attachment 335190View attachment 335191View attachment 335192View attachment 335193View attachment 335194View attachment 335195View attachment 335196View attachment 335197View attachment 335198View attachment 335199View attachment 335200 on the ship, splaying the hinge plates to fit. Then each hinge was attached with nails to the aft ship hull. Next up: The aft cannon doors.
WELL DONE

Very good work, Phil; You are so right about the fiddly bits taking up a lot of time, but hey ... that's part of the build.

Build Log: Nuestra Senora del Pilar (OcCre 1:46)

Continuing on. The build gets slower with all the little fiddly bits and details. This portion of the Build Log shows the aft gun port doors. They still need further attention and finishing but they are set in place. Additionally, I am including the port side fenders and the start of the many gun port doors. They will eventually be painted (red in/yellow out) and set in their places. Each door has an eyelet and ring for pulling the door closed. But the plans show now lines/ropes installed, just the hardware. In order to insure that each eyelet is installed precisely, I made a little jig from scrap wood and plexiglas to line up each door for drilling with a Dremel. It works well. (And I have a LOT of plexiglas in the shop should I need to make other jigs.)
Please let me know if you have suggestions or comments.

Morning from Spain
As Henrich mentioned a very well build Ended. All these tiny parts are part of the model build. Weare not doing a jigsaw, puzzle - there will be many more in the future. the only part of your build I do not like -I KNOW THIS IS MAINLY ME- and "is" the Dummy gunport on the lower deck. I hope that none of the backside parts with the gun pipe gets loose, and fell into the hull. NO WAY TO RESCUE IT- SorryPhill, but I hate them.
note: Phill, I am answering you, because apparently I am on your list-which is OK, although I am more of a sleeper now, and this MODEL-if space and money allowed me -would be my next build.

I don't prefer the dummy ports either, but this is a kit and being ony the 2nd ship for me, I'll stick with the instructions. I'll add detail where I can. Thank you for your insight!
HI. It is not that difficult. you add the gun frames, but do not close their inner side. The only big problem is that you will have to make new cun carriage, pipes, etc.. have a look -for the next one. remember NOT to insert one deck, insert the guns, set fast, then you can o to the next deck.
it is extra work, but worse
