Nuestra Senora del Pilar by Occre - Build log

Just catching up on your excellent log Phil, really great work. That trunnion band jig is a clever idea, which I hope you’re ok if it’s copied for personal use :).

Build Log: Nuestra Senora del Pilar (OcCre, 1:46)

Continuing on with getting armament built and installed. This log portion shows the cannons being placed on the decks. It only includes the first 16 cannons. More to follow. I need to blacken the barrels of the next groups before I install them.

I found that I pre-drilled holes in the bulwarks a little too small so I had to chase the holes with a larger drill bit. Since the cannons needing attention were below deck, I had to contrive a way to allow the drill bit to reach. What I found was the handle of one of my micro saws worked nicely to hold the drill bit tightly and allow me the reach (distance) from one side of the ship to the other. I installed the eyelets in place with a tiny drop of CA.

Next up - the addition of channels and deadeyes and all their associated hardware. I have a lot of brass rod to bend and solder to make it all come together.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments.

I like your choice of colors. They go great together.

You are making great progress, Phil. Your work is methodical and very cleanly executed. I also like the color scheme of the ship, but would have preferred a more subdued red.

Hi Phil. I wouldn't change that now - I know you have only been following the instructions. For future reference you can keep the colour Ochre Red of Admiralty Paints in mind when red is called for.

Good morning Phil.
First of all, congratulations again for your nice and skillful work, you're doing a truly good job.
Of course is your model and you can do whatever you want but let me say that the instructions booklet is not the Bible. The manufacturers themselves even don't follow the actual plans of the ships due to several reasons. They should offer a quite affordable work so they simplify many aspects in order to be easier to bulid and other important issue (or the most) is that they change (yes, change o modify) things to cheapen the production costs.
Now let me take the topic about the red. When I made the Nepomuceno, I realised that the red colour of the inner parts of the ship was quite bright and did't look very realistic so I made some tests, of course out the boat, and could kill that brightness with a watering of very diluted wenge dyeing.
Her you can see the results. It's really easy to do.

So if you decide to do it, remember: the tests always out of the ship.
