Hello all!

This is the start of my build from scratch, with whatever materials I can find, to make the Oro Jackson. This ship is from the show One Piece where it was the ship of the Roger Pirates, the first and only ship to have made it to Laugh Tale and find the One Piece. The Capt name is featured on one of the sails.

Today I am working on guessing dimensions haha.. most of this was done by feel. Making a small scale model from cardboard boxes around the house to get a better feel for the 3d shape and try to capture some of the wimsy bounce and curve from the artist Oda but also have it be the impressive and epic.

Debating if it should be deeper or wider or just more oumf.

Cut and assembled the cardboard base to look at size.

IMG_20250417_113113293~2.jpg

It's so floppy though it is hard to get an accurate reading as seen from the top view below of the above shot haha

IMG_20250417_113118263~2.jpg

Still it works to get me to ask more questions. Like "why does it look short" which is obvious when looking at the sketch it is because practically a third of the ship is missing -- where the cannons and other decorations go.

IMG_20250417_114525511.jpg

After looking at the cannon ports I think these sections that stick up will need to handled after the hull is built.

IMG_20250417_114534739.jpg

It still feels like I have the shapes wrong somehow. Is the Hull deep enough? Round enough?

With the second picture they are laughing so the curves are intentionally exaggerated to make it seem like the ship is laughing too. But even with the first picture here the ship still comes off much more rotund than what I feel my cardboard version is giving.

Much to think on...

Log 3:
Last night I tried to figure out how to get it to look more round. I spent a lot of time reading through the build logs of the San Francisco II in an attempt to get a better hull shape. I made the depth of the hull longer at the center to exaggerate the rounded shape. Additionally, seeing how the San Francisco II would curve in below the waterline in the back, I think with perspective would help to exaggerate the rounded shape so I added that to my sketches as well.

I might build a cardboard jig to prevent the cardboard from twisting so I can get a good look at the shape.

If anyone has any ships they recommend I look at for help with shaping I would appreciate that :3 thank you in advance.

Yep looks like the shape adjustments worked out quite nicely. Now that it feels more round and ship like I think I am good to move onto the next step. A size fit to see how big we are going to scale up this version.

A test fit in a baking pan if I get a wild hair to use the plans make a "show stopper" like in the "great British bakeoff" has me about a hands width short of the pan haha so I can go much bigger hear me out, jello ocean with a scone hull, a cake inside, fruit sheets for the sails, twislers for the ropes lol dreaming aside, back to the build lol

A test fit of the peep tells me I can get ridiculously big haha peeps are 2.5in long, 1.5 in wide and 1.5 in tall. The ship is currently 4.5 in wide and about 8in long in hull not including the overhang. I would measure metric but the handy ruler the fiance got for free was imperial. So that makes it A LOT bigger I got to go to have the peep be the scale of a person. Considering the Oro Jackson is one of the bigger ships in the One Piece Universe

Gwahahahahah to make it to scale with peeps as people it'll be the size of my coffee table lolol 40in long, 18 in wide, hull will be mostly 20 in tall --- oh but the masts will be longer than that gwahahahahah oh this will be fun.

Though with that size I won't be able to afford to use wood. Maybe I'll make a smaller scale model later where I do use wood.

Part of me is "be realistic, make something you'll keep and actually have room to display in your house." The other part of me is not allowing the ship to be manned with a crew of three peeps. It needs to fit many peeps!!!

Given that I'll think I may need to rethink the size and spacing of the frames. While only 9 are visible from the outside, I don't think it'd be a problem to have many more in the inside. 40in long. GwaHahaha

Very interesting project, to be sure. I’ll be interested to see how it turns out. A false deck would be useful for keeping your patterns aligned.
Thank you! I'll have to try the false deck. I'll check the forms to see how that is obtained in a mockup. The ship has many levels and I'm swapping out the frames as I try new cuts so I'm not gluing anything yet. I did tighter more precise cuts with a slightly thicker board and for the most part that's enough for this stage.

All good scratch builds should start with Dr Peppers Peeps

Thank you!!! I'll keep trying. Glad to have the support here as it really helps :3

Part of my encouragement to finish the build I want to try them soooo bad haha #laughing #crying - if I open the package then they will go stale. And my waist can't afford a second package

At some point I'm going to lose track of the numbers and not scroll back up haha...

Started on how I'm going to structure the frames so support the decks.
IMG_20250419_213307800.jpg

From there figured out the size of the lowest deck. IMG_20250419_213320953.jpg

Then had some fun on the upper decks

After much debate with the the conflicts in the source material vs logic vs followup material decided to use the deck plan that tries to satisfy all of them.

Then I ran into finding out to do the with the stairs to the back deck. I think I might do a ladder approach as i think it is as close to the source as the space will allow.

made progress on scaling up the model. I don't know yet if I want to do glue together multiple pieces to make the frames.
I cut out two decks and sketched the first of the frames. But I'm not sure how I want to cut them yet. These first few seem more decorative rather than something intended to hold a deck.

Thank you Rebus!

I got worried about materials and my fiance has allowed me to use one of the bike boxes he has been storing in the rafters. He has two bikes, don't know why we need 5 bike boxes lol good news is they are all long continuous pieces which will make my cuts easy! If anyone is contemplating a build from cardboard of this size, your local bike shop may be the willing to part with their extras as that's how we got two of the rafter collection.

10 days left till the peep competition on April 30. Excited to make some good progress this week now that it's just cut pray and adjust from here on out. I'll probably watch some videos tonight on how to make cardboard look like wood. I'll probably add some wood elements or make something between the pilot and the peep to be the one I keep at home. I don't know that I can justify keeping a coffee table sized ship in our tiny apartment

Grids and fake wood
IMG_20250421_215655636.jpg

IMG_20250421_124236474.jpgCreated a template out of a minilla folder at work.
I put something soft down then jabbed a pencil or round head clay tool. A hole punch would of been best. When I got home I made the holes thicker with a drill bit.IMG_20250421_215755622.jpgi got to making progress on using the template on the bike box. It'll be good for the keel and the deck board as those will be large cuts.
Once my grid is complete I'll get started on scaling up the drafts right on the board. When I get to the frames I'll start with the either the largest and work in or the smallest and work out.
IMG_20250421_215719495.jpgIMG_20250421_215740781.jpg

As it would take more popsicle sticks than I can afford for this size, I have played around with some planking options.

Maybe I'll paint them tomorrow. I'm too tired today with trying to get the grid in place.

I also grabbed some skewers for the railings. I saw someone turn a drill into a mini wood cut spiny thing... lithe? Sp? Might try that.

I wonder what project I'll give myself at work tomorrow to reward my work progress. Maybe I can figure the size of the figure heads or the back lanterns... Oh right. I should probably figure out the dims for the sails rigging and masts.... Hahahah.... T.T

took a break and raided the local craft store for supplies as it is closing in 8 days.

As I lack work working skills I am improvising with beads on a post. They make a cute ivory look. It'll be a shame to paint them to match the ship
