I believe that a scriber block or surface gauge does a much better job providing that the hull is on a perfectly level surface.
The supplied templates only cover one side of the ship and many templates need to be faired in order to fit correctly. If they are later reversed to mark the other side of the inner hull they can't be 'un-faired', and altered for the opposite side of the hull, if you see my point!
Also, if the hull interior is not perfectly symmetrical, or the construction thus far is not very accurate, the templates will mark different heights on each side of the hull as the templates will effectively rotate around the hull's longitudinal axis, or be displaced in height.
