Santa Ana 1784 AL by PaulV

And now the fun begins:

The Bowsprit main and spirit sail & yards added
The only real difficulty was making sure the lines & sails we added in the correct order ( ower to upper). The number of lines was significant and delicate placing was needed.
Unfortunately the block holes were not designed for .25 thread so hand to be enlarged with a pin vise.

Next will be the fore mast yards . ( Not built so It will take a little longer.) I iwll also create the rope loops for the current rigging as its gong to get a little crowded to do later.)

I'm not very computer literate. If I can figure out how to post photos? I'm currently working on the Santa ana 1784. At this point I have 11 of the 19 sails on. They belaying lines are not quite clear on the instructions...... Some of them I know are just flat out WRONG. This project, Artesania Latina instructions definately have left alot to be desired. Right now, working on the foremast main.. It has definately been a challenge. Also been using the Peterssen rigging book.

Hi Ken,here you have all the tutorials how to use the forum.

Hi Ken, yep totally agree with you. I've not updated in a while, as I am slowly completing the yard rigging blocks. 4 yards to go then I'll re log my progress.
I agree that this is the worst set of rigging instructions I have seen. I'm just going by the peters-sen book and by logical feel at this stage.
I noticed that there are a compete set of lines on the plans that are not even mentioned.

I intend to finish this so someone will have a log to look at as a reference , Its a real pity as its a great model, just a major shame the doco & plans are sooooooo.... bad. Definitely not for the faint hearted, just for us masochistic modellers.

As AL have finished up, the only kits around are those already purchased, or old stock. I can now see why no one had done log in English.
I went to modelismonavel.com for logs as there are two of them completed on that site, but they also varied off the plans.

Thank you for your response. At least now I know that I'm not crazy.....at least not so much. You mentioned "a complete set of lines that are not mentioned"? What is this? Started this thing over 6 years ago and when started cutting in gun ports,,,,I went uh-oh, is this what's to come all the way through? Sure was. Sat for many years.... finally said I'm gonna burn it or finish it. Turned out pretty well. If I would of been able to spend half the time bldg instead of research, would of been done by now. Thank you.

Hi all,
After a long time between updates, I have finally finished the yards. The main issues with the kit were the braces for the yard extensions ( spirit sails)?.
The braces were generic and very flimsy. The extensions had to be sanded a lot smaller to fit and as such became very breakable( fixed 2).
The tapering was done on the proxxon DB250 lathe with a simple sanding block.
The longest part was convincing my mind to rig all the blocks ( Which had to have all the holes re drilled to acommadate the AL thread.)

Here is the completed set

Note the brass wire pegging.

This was suggested in the Keith Julier books and makes positioning of the yards on the masts easy. ( as seen no glue added they are just pinned in place ready for the next process

Speaking of which next is the lower for yard sails. Stay tuned.

Looks familiar...I managed to get a little ahead of you. I'm down to the last five sails. I'm still questioning that darned rigging layout. Had to do my exgentions by hand. No lathe. Looks good.

Paulv1958,,,,I'm running short on the .25 rigging thread.... don't know if I have enough for the braces......any bright ideas......I've been to various local hobby and sewing shops but to no avail... Thinking about making the braces out of something different.

Hi Ken Try

I had four roles in my kit.

they have some in stock by the look of it. I still have 2 roles left, but I am very frugal with it. Good luck.

Okay the Foremast main sail is up and rigged.
The only major issues I had were
1. The rigging for the outer edge of the sail was not documented anywhere. It was only a glance at the full size poster that AL provided, that I noticed that it was pinned just before the hull ladders and at the fore of the ship. Petersens guide to rigging provides very little info for sail rigging.
2. There is no guide as to how far the sail should be furled.I chose a bout half as it allows the rigging to be seen and tightened.
3. For some reason the rigging blocks for the sails are on the rear, not the front, if you follow the mast building. Fortunately there are eyelets placed to the front
As this will not be seen once the other sails are added, I chose not to re rig he blocks as it was too fiddley and line breakage work. NOTE do not rig as per the mast diagrams under the lower platforms, rig to the front.

To all the members, thanks for being such a wonderful group , free of prejudice and just ship modellers at heart.
To everyone, all the best over the festive period, and a safe and happy time to you and your families, may the best years of modeling be yet to come.

I'm at to the point of finishing the top gallant mizzen today. (last sail, yahoo!!) It gets more confusing.....at least for me it was...... just kind of had to ad lib. Good luck.

Well its been a while, but at long last the final rigging has been completed.
I apologize up front for the quality of the photos but I dropped my sony a6 and broke the 50mm kit lens.
The photos are with my phone camera.
Rigging a 1st rate with sails is a monster job. I cant count the number of expletives, broken rigging & bloody stun sail booms that get caught in every thing. Forceps & tweezers have a habbit of getting caught in everything.

The space on a 1/84 is ridiculously narrow. The sheer number of lines and looking through shrouds to tie off on pins behind is a massive patience & perseverence challenge. I don't know how may times the admiral would ask me to do somethin right in the middle of a complex tie or complain about the loud grumbling and expletives.

I will try and take some better shots when i replace the lens.

Its now on to the cannon port lids, boat hanging anchors & fiddly rope loops for the rigging end. See yo at the cannon bits.
