"Santa Maria" 1492 a.d. Kit from "Ships by Pavel Nikitin"

Vance, you have built a beautiful model that is a credit to both your skill and talent in bringing the best out of Pavel's kit. Your build log has been very important to me as I get organized to build by own version of this model. Thank you for persevering.

Hi GGibson, I have some thoughts on Pavel’s comments. Here’s some quotes he left
on my YouTube channel of the Santa Maria. “Unfortunately this kit is too complicated for
you” “ So far you’re doing very mediocre” “ The complexity will be insurmountable for
you” “He is not a Professional builder of ships”. These are not translations errors. It’s
intentional. He tried to pass it off as translation errors. He doesn’t like the fact I called him
out on the errors and flaws of the kit. Even in the unboxing video you can see some flaws,
mis marked pieces, missing rigging blocks, ropes in the wrong box’s. Also, did you notice
he didn’t show a serial number? He has already turned some people off. I recommend you still build this ship. When you work way through and complete the build, it is satisfying. Sending along some completed photos.
Vance
Wonder if he would call Ohla incompetent? She had some issues with the laser cut planking not fitting on her Viking long boat that she is building from his kit.
Sounds a very arrogant person to me. I won't buy any of his products with that attitude.
A good manufacturer would take note and offer a solution.
Your model turned out great.

Not long ago--3 weeks maybe--Olha Batchvarov posted a box opening of Pavel's Santa Maria on YouTube, and expressed her intentions of posting her build at some future date. I would love to follow her effort, or learn about where it has been started if anyone at SOS has information in that regard. In the meantime, the build logs posted by Vance and Joe? are performing a great service to modelers like me.

In this thread I am posting a video of the construction of the ‘Santa Maria’ kit designed and manufactured by our company. Since this kit has been produced for more than a year and sold for the same amount of time, a lot of modellers build it. I have a legitimate question, why in my topic to post photos of the construction of this ship by another modeller ? I have a number of criticisms about the construction of this ship by other modellers, that's why I opened this thread and started a video of the construction of this kit, this will be my answer to those who just could not understand what is in the instructions of this kit. Each modeller has his own methods of work, to draw it on paper is often just not realistic. And I would very much like to convey my ideas as clearly as possible. So I have a big request, do not need to clog my theme with the results of their work, ask questions of course you need, but here are photos and video is absolutely unnecessary. I hope for understanding...

On the question of the length of the boards, which arose on the construction of ‘Oseberg’ by Olga, in the video number 2 read the comments of the modeller who still decided to build according to the instructions, and not as it was done by Olga. He was very surprised that everything worked out, and also asked to send him new boards to replace the ones that had been ruined by Olga's recommendations. Literally ten days ago he asked Olga this question, read her reply, you will be surprised. On the question of Olga's incompetence, Olga does not have 40 years of experience as a carpenter, but I have this experience, and it is this experience that gives me the opportunity to develop the design of ships, which she sometimes just can not understand, and tries to build them based on her experience.

Let me correct you, Olga posted the unpacking video almost a year ago. She raffled off this kit on her channel. She doesn't have another kit like this, and I seriously doubt she'll get it. In the future, all our developments will be built first on our channel and we won't involve any outside modelers for this. The Oseberg and Santa Maria kits are already being built on our channel, and the construction of the Naf from Winchelsea is also being shown on video, it will go on sale early next year, by which time the entire process of building this ship will be filmed on video. The publication of this construction will begin in a week.

Hi Pavel,
I couldn't find any comments in video 2 but found one regard butt gluing planks in vid 3. Is that the one you meant, it was posted 3 weeks ago?

Yes, this is exactly what I wrote about, on Olga's channel this modeler very politely asked her about this moment, in personal correspondence with me he did not mince words and called things by their proper names. And believe me, this is far from the only case in a year and a half when modelers do not agree with Olga's opinion. I do not particularly care about this, but she misleads those who buy our kits ... That is why I started filming videos of the construction of our kits two months ago, it takes a lot of time, building three ships at the same time is not easy, but I could not think of another way to convey truthful information to modelers. And even despite the fact that building on video takes time from new developments, I will have to go this way ... And of course I will try to prevent the construction of my kits on Olga's channel in the future, at least the first video about the construction of new kits will be from me, and then I will not need to look for excuses ...

I admit that I am a beginner at this branch of the hobby and admit the Oseberg is one I would love to build at some point.
I have watched your build of it so far. Guess that's the one to watch.

Kits that I develop are oriented exactly on beginners, and for their construction do not need almost any additional equipment, that's what I show in my videos. All you need is accuracy and absolutely no hurry.... Building models is first of all a pleasure and only then the ship itself. A few days ago I saw on YouTube the construction of ‘Santa Maria’ Already about 12 videos, the modeller absolutely does not grind the parts, just pulls out the plates and puts them in the ship.... I wanted to cry seeing this.... But at the same time the guy is having fun, and does not criticise the kit for not fitting together. I'm actually quite surprised that he put this ship together.... He'll get experience in time, it's just a matter of time....

Pavel, are there any developments to report on your own build of the Santa Maria? A video similar to the excellent you posted on the Santa Maria slipway is what I am looking for.

Good timing of your question. It looks like part 2 (keel) will be published in 2hr20min. 11 GMT.

I will try to post a video about building the Santa Maria every fortnight. The thing is that I have three ships in construction, one of them is brand new, so I can't post more often physically.

Pavel, I appreciate very much what you have presented here. It is helpful to see how the author of a kit brings it together. I have not seen this done before!

Thank you :) My kits are made up of thousands of parts and as much as I try to convey information in printed instructions, not everything can be drawn or described in words, a lot you just have to see, that's why I started building my ships on video. And starting with the next kit, these video reviews will be published before the new kit goes on sale.

Thank you for your kind words, it is very much appreciated !
On the 15th of November the first video on building a Winchelsea Nafe will be released on my YouTube channel. Of all the projects I have done together with my friend and co-author Eugene Troppmann, this one is the most difficult and the most interesting :)
