Santa Maria - Mantua - scale 1:50 modified kit semi scratch and diorama

Hi Zoltan, the hull is looking great, can't wait to see how the wood turns out when a varnish is applied.

A small criticism if I may, I noticed how you planked the stem of the keel, as you no doubt know the stem was a solid piece of wood that ran up from the keel, however in this case I think it would be hardly noticeable given the size of the pieces. After all, nobody admires a model closer than six inches.

Regards
Eric

Thanks Eric for the kind words, I still have to generate some scratch futtock riders before I varnish the hull, the kit instruction suggesting strips for futtock riders actually made up of two layers of strips.I have 5mm thick walnut sheets, so I purchased a contour gauge which is a good tool to get the hull's exact shape for the futtock riders, then transfer the lines and cut them out.

The kit instruction

The shape I try to emulate after I got the exact line from the hull

Very nice job with the planking, have you decided if you are going to paint or leave the natural walnut finish?

Hi, thank you for your comment, I will leave natural and use satin clear poly for varnish.

GemmaJF and Donnie, thanks for looking in and for the nice comments ,there is gonna be no paint on this model just natural finish, probably the sails are will be stained.

I have finished planking the rudder and were trying to make them aligned with the planking on the stern post.

I still have to install the hinges on the rudder and the sternpost, but not at this stage,I still moving the hull around a lot and I don't want knock off the rudder while turning her or something.

Very nice,
Contour gages come in handy, that walnut will look great with a good clear coat, it will really pop

Hi Zoltan

Now that is some of the best planking I have ever seen, well done.

Wow.

Denis.

Thanks for everyone visiting my build log, and for the nice comments.I built 4 more gun carriage,2 mahogany, and 2 walnuts, I changed my mind on pear carriages, I think mahogany and walnut fits better, I mean the wood contrast, the deck is teak and the inner bulwark is mahogany.

They look well good, like the walnut in particular, looks like they mean business and have seen some action. :handgestures-thumbup:

Hi Zoltan

Thanks Gemma,I just thought that the pear carriages are not really color and "realistic " compatible.

Thanks Denis,Yes I will blacken the cannons when I do the trunnions and other metal parts for the carriages.

I was working on the futtock riders on the starboard side, as I mentioned earlier, the shape I try to emulate after I got the exact lines from the hull is on this plan.
I used my contour gauge to get the correct line/shape for the futtock ridder

Hello Zoltan

Golly that sure looks like a very nice kit, lots of very fine details and extra goodies. Did you buy that stern gallery casting or was it part of your kit. I just joined up on the M S B Form and was a bit surprised to find you here. Still looking for a set of build plans for the Spanish Galleon the San Francisco II , seam to be very hard to find, ENJOY.

Regards Lawrence
