Santa Maria - Mantua - scale 1:50 modified kit semi scratch and diorama

Looking good! I'm coming up to this stage soon, though I'm doing a different kit the images of the first planking and how you have tackled the stern are a great help.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

I removed the stern planking because I decided to plank diagonally, much more realistic and historically accurate.

Already during planking the hull I realized that the planks are too thin or the required more frames or filler blocks between the bulkheads, planks were just too soft bending as I pushed a little bit, but since the hull planking was almost done I had to figure out something else. With a paintbrush, I forced a little carpenter's glue between the planks, like this glued each plank edge together and by wiping the extra glue off with a wet cloth I created a thin glue surface on the plank and after drying just got solid hard across the hull.Next, I used wood filler to fix uneven spots than upon drying first sanding was done.

Second sanding is done, I am cleaning the dust off then see if any more filling job needed.

I was working on the stern and successfully completed three scratch built stern windows that were not on the Mantua plan except the middle one that is kit supplied (same as the quarter deck bulkhead/cabin window).

...and the stern pictures of the construction

Windows has been cut out of the plate

Building up the planking around the windows cut out on the stern plate.

Next, I glued a piece of transparent plastic on the back of center window

I built the window frames for the side windows made out of basswood strip usually used by model railroaders, very tiny strips from Midwest, stained with walnut, center window also stained .

I like the change to the stern planking, hull planking looks good as well

Thanks,I don't even know why I planked the stern first time horizontally.

Hi Zoltan, I am intrigued by your style of planking on the SM, also, I didn't think that she had such a slim/sharp bow, but it 'modified'.
Also the centre "windows", are they actually windows or a doorway, if they are a doorway do you intend putting a balcony around the stern (might be an option to consider if not).
Enjoying your build log.

Hello Eric, thanks for stopping by to check out my build log,on the stern the center opening is a window too, acctually the same window what you see on the quarterdeck cabin window.

Hi Zoltan

That is some nice model, I do like your planking very neat, how are you going to finish the hull, varnish, oil or paint.

Denis.

Thanks Denis, I will use a few coats of poly (satin).

Good morning everyone, so my last post about planking was done around the beginning of last year November than I packed up everything because we moved to a new place.

So continuing on the second planking.

IMG_6869.jpgIMG_6870 (1920x1280).jpgIMG_6875.jpg
I continued planking and made some changes on the bulwark by the quarter-deck at the cabin' bulkhead, the Mantua's plans show a square drop off from the poop deck rails to the quarterdeck bulwark.

I cut a little bit off the bulwark to make the nice curvy drop as this plan shows

So here are the planking progress and bulwark changes I made.

Workshop looks fab! Moving is always so difficult, but the up side is you can plan the workshop from the start and have it close to how you really want it.

Planking is looking great!

I finished planking the inner bulwark just the frame imitation not glued in yet still waiting, need some deck fittings to build which goes under the quarter deck along the gun carriages.I can't glue on the quarter deck until the deck fittings under it installed.
