Sheaves

there was a model car supplier that sold custom parts in brass like that. I cannot remember the name of the company.

Thanks Bryian. They don't seem to have sheaves, but they do have small brass washers that may work in a pinch.. A question. Are washers measured by inside diameter? It sure looks like it in the pictures.

Edit-- of course they are measure by ID. Don't know where my head was. I don't think the washers will work. The holes are too big. And if the washers are small enough, they would probably be too thin.

Can you buy small brass sheaves like in the picture? I made these but they are a PITA and the results are kinda inconsistent.

here you go Don, they are around the corner from you.

Thanks Jim. They are about 8.5" in 1:48. That should work. It would be super if they had more sizes but 3mm will do.

I wound up spending $60 with only $6 freight, great site. I bought wooden sheaves instead of brass as they came in 3 sizes.

I have also been looking for sheaves.
I found them at the Amati store

and also at Cornwall model boats

And there are others too.

It would be great if you could supply links to your findings. It will help others in case they are on the hunt for those...many thanks in advance.

I'd buy a brass round rod and sliced as many sheaves as required.
That's what I've been doing on my lathe and I couldn't get the thickness consistent. I would have to throw away half of them. I think my lathe is a little big for such small stuff or maybe I'm just incompetent. I'll still have to make a few of the larger ones.

how many do you need? I have a mini lathe with a digital read out with .01mm accuracy. I can't promise, but if I had time and depending on how many you need, I might be able to accomplish this. I have made these before for some Bitts. The sheaves had a groove too. I think they were like 2mm wide or 1.5 wide if I remember.
I would need the diameter and width and also the hole in the center. I have to check my raw stock too.

Thank you very much Donnie but I think I have enough sources now. I also keep discovering new places that I need them, so I really don't have a clue how many or what size. Building without plans is very confusing/surprising.

Nice job on those Donnie :), especially in steel. I found that the hole would run off if I tried to do more than one at a time. That was probably a dull drill, but I never thought of that at the time. The big problem I had was trying to get them the same (and accurate) thickness. I was using the depth gauge on my digital calipers measuring from the end of the stock to the cut off tool. No matter how I did it turned out to be a crap shoot. I actually found that I could get them closer by eye than by measuring. I was going for .050" to fit in a 1/16"(.063") slot. They were too big or too small. I'll try again when I'm more in the mood.
