Soleil Royal - ZHL 1/90 Scale by Paulb [COMPLETED BUILD]

A few more pictures...
I noticed that the dummy cannons don't stick out as much because the receptacles for them are more recessed. I'm not sure if I'm going to leave this as is or try and find a solution. I have also painted the gun tackle with diluted Tamiya desert yellow (XF-59) which looks much better than the original white.View attachment 179616View attachment 179617View attachment 179618View attachment 179619View attachment 179620View attachment 179621
Wow! There is a big difference. It doesn't look like that on the starboard side, does it? (Just looking at the pictures.) You're doing an amazing job on it, though. I wish I could start on mine while eyeballing yours. Gotta finish Connie and Black Pearl first.

Yes... now I remember your previous posting when those sails arrived. I would love to see many pictures of a full rigging process.

Cheers
Daniel

They are really both the same scale. I've checked the sails against the yardarms on the plans and they fit perfectly, and are really nice! See photos.

The ZHL Soleil Royal isn't 1/90 scale - it's more like 1/70 or 1/77. I've checked the hull, keel, gun deck lengths against what I could find on the internet and that's what I get.

Is Mr Deep speechless?

Well, I'm not a representative of ZHL.Questions should be addressed to them .You just need to compare the frames from Mantua with the frames from ZHL.And you will see the difference in scale. The table doesn't say anything. There are no original drawings of this ship.Where does the data on the length and width of the case come from?As a result, change the name of the topic to a scale of 1:70...77.

Now, on the scans of drawings from Mantua, I measured the width of the midsection frame. It turned out about 200 mm.This is without double skinning. Then I measured the width of the case on my model. It turned out about 180 mm.Draw your own conclusions.

My numbers come from
https://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_ship&id=1917

This source exactly matches my book "French Warships in the Age of Sail 1626-1786" by Winfield & Roberts, page 60. The numbers in these references are in the French feet (pieds) and inches (pouces). In order to convert to values accepted today you must multiply by 1.065746 (this information is in the above book on page 2). I used these converted numbers in the above matrix to determine what I think to be the correct scale of 1/71 (approximately).

The scale in the title is 1/90 because that's the advertised scale and I didn't want to confuse people.

Inaccuracies on model kits should not be a revelation to anyone anymore. On the otherwise superb and probably industry-setting standard (Luhaiqingkong-manufactured) version of the Royal Caroline sold by ZHL, there are marked discrepancies between the length of the side ornamentations and that of the hull. One builder on this forum (that I know of) has even gone so far as to lengthen the hull to rectify this.

ok but is the scale inaccuracy inconsistant throughout the model or just parts ?

Building the ZHL Soleil kit myself at the moment too and it looks to be all of the parts in the kit are incorrect to the stated 1/90 scale on the box. However all of the parts are in scale with each other, so it is not a case of multiple scales within the one kit, just a mislabeled scale for the kit overall.

Overall the ZHL kit parts do match quite closely in size to those of both the Mantua and DeAgostini kits which vary from 1/77 for the Mantua and 1/70 for the DeAg, so Paul is pretty spot on with his estimate of 1/71.
