Sovereign of The Seas 1637 - Heavily modified Mantua kit

Good day,

I have been building my Sovereign of the Seas kit for some years now and will start with a few comments about it. I basically took the bones of the kit and built the framework of the ship and then duplicated all the bulkheads and deck parts I had used and put the kit back together and sold it. From there, I scratch built the ship to the point it is at now. I enclose a photo of the stern as it sits now. The ornamentation that was included with the kit was not to my liking and with significant research, I wanted to duplicate contemporary presentations of the ship in my model.

I will add some of the research I did to arrive at my decision to carve all the ornamentation as this log builds.

More to follow.............

This is quite truly an amazing build, i've just started my DeAgostini version of this ship and although i'm not going to get your level of detail it certainly has given me much thought and inspiration.
Thank you.

Good heavens!! Like Bill said, stunning!! Absolutely and wonderfully stunning

I have been absent from this forum for an extended period for several personal reasons but have returned to modelling SOS again. Photos of my progress will start again, although at a reduced pace. It is still my goal to finish her and share my methods with anyone who is interested.

Some added carvings on the port 1728499759874.jpeg

i need to ask which wood are you using for your carvings , and what do you use to cut through the blades for your scrapers ?

Sorry for the late reply. I use 50 year old English Boxwood that I purchased in 1997. All carvings were formed using a dental drill with steel burs. The scrapers were formed using a hand held mini drill fitted with a circular disc suitable for cutting metal.

Hope that helps,
Bill
