Sovereign of the Seas Sergal 1:78 by Terry

Hi Kurt,
Which manufacturer is your SOTS from? I don't recall seeing anything about that—just asking so I can start taking notes right away! Hahaha.
Cheers
Really? It's at the beginning of the build log. The model started out as a DeAgostini kit, but pretty much right away, the frames were modified based on accurate hull shape information and the model went pretty much all scratch built from there, hence the title of the build log. It's been a 5 year adventure in research and building so far. Many features including fully interior decks were added along the way just for fun. I'm a bit envious of you guys building the Mantua kit because you can build so much faster than I can at my rate, and get beautiful results. I always loved the constrast of their decoration set against the black and red. I have both the Amati and Mantua decoration sets, bought when before my model's course took shape as to whether or not to go kit-only, historically accurate full scratch build, or somewhere in between.

Thanks Paul for your faster response. You beat me again! ROTF

Thank you, John,
You're right. It is trivial, but when I think of the beakhead bulkhead having only one door and a steep ladder on the SOtS, It makes me wonder if there might be another door beneath it with direct access to the Seats of Ease which is not shown in sketches or paintings. Even dumping chamber pots could be tricky. Anyway, I'm glad you found that source. I'm going to order the book "The Vulger Tubes" by Joe Simmons. I think it'll be an interesting read. Hope you have a great day. Terry
Below s a little more information on the head that might interest you. It's from some plans for the Sovereign that I am developing (I have revised some aspects of them since my last post on the topic). One thing I didn't explicitly say it his post is that it was not uncommon for sailors to use the bilge instead of the seats of ease. This gave ships a distinctive odor. If the odor was not present, the crew often became concerned because it meant the ship was leaking a lot, so the bilge pumps were being worked a lot.

Hehehe seriously, my friend!!!remember that I was a relatively latecomer to this forum, so to speak. I’ve been focusing mostly on the rigging issues, which I still haven't managed to resolve, but that’s a whole other story! Of course, I’ve been following your posts regarding the 3D decorations you’re creating, but I wasn't 100% aware that you were actually building a kit while incorporating your own custom modifications. You know, I really love that idea because as you rightly point out by making all those changes, you delve much deeper into the actual historical reality of the ship. I also suspect that the build has taken you so long not just because of the modifications, but also because you’ve undertaken the project of creating all the decorative pieces in 3D, which I think is an absolutely brilliant idea! Speaking of which, I’m not particularly fond of the figures and ornaments included in the standard kit. So, I figure I have two options: either I try to improve them myself using a Dremel and a whole lot of patience, or I just wait to see what results you come up with! Hahaha. You know, eventually, you could pitch this idea to the manufacturers; they could grant you a copyright for your work and incorporate those excellent ornaments you’re creating into their kits. From what I can see right now, it seems only Mantua Sergal is producing this model I don't know of any other kit out there. I’m not sure if I mentioned it before, but I actually received my own kit a few weeks ago, though I still haven't opened it yet! Hehehe. I bought it during a sale ModelExpo was running; right now, it’s the best price on the market though, of course, I had to purchase the sails separately, since you know the Mantua kit doesn't come with them included. In short, my dear friend, I’m delighted to discover that you’re also working on the SOTS project. Now I’ll be compelled to go back through the posts from 2022 and 2023 to follow the entire transformation process of your SOTS build!
Sending you a big hug, and I’ll be keeping a close eye on the progress of those ornaments, they’re turning out absolutely excellent! I’ll be messaging you privately soon to ask you a few technical "engineering" questions.
Hahaha. All the best!
Cheers

I would have though you were here for years. You fit right in! :D Just so you know, kit bashing where you take a kit and heavily modify it, hence bashing. You can add as little or as much detail as you wish, all according to the time and money you wish to devote, and your skill level with tools. No kit comes close to one with even a small amount of additional detail added. Other forum members are full of ideas and sources for parts for you modifications. Read lost of other's build logs, use their ideas, and make a simplified kit model all your own.

Haha, thanks for your honest comment! Actually, my father was a naval engineer, and as a kid, I was into model building. We didn't have a lot of resources, but since I had the opportunity to travel to Europe with my parents, I’d take advantage of those trips to buy my models all plastic, of course, since they were more affordable. But one thing I learned was to be meticulous and always strive to do things as well as possible; I think that’s where my passion and skill came from. Plus, my Polish grandfather was into scratch-building WWII aircraft models, so I guess that’s where my DNA comes into play, too! He always used to tell me, "Do it once and do it right", that way, you save time and avoid having to go back.:) I’ll take your advice and keep browsing through the posts from 2015–2020 and taking notes ;) , of course. Even though they’re older threads, I sometimes comment on one without realizing the date; maybe that’s why it seemed to you like I’d been on the forum for years, but in reality, I don’t think I’ve been here on SOS for more than a month and a half. I’m still finishing up the HMS Terror, but I don’t want to touch the SOTS until I’ve finished the Terror first. It is too expensive to ruin due to a lack of research, reading, and studying all the details. That’s why, during this time while I’m waiting for parts to build my own rope-making machine, I’m getting my bearings and taking notes so I don’t mess up the SOTS! Haha—though I don’t think that will happen, Perhaps that is exactly the reason why I am so active around here. Cheers amigo!!
