Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

Mates,

Thanks for the Name Day wishes - much appreciated.

The ship's boat is basically done. Will attach oars, a coiled rope and such, as well as connecting the anchor that will be stowed aboard - not hanging down.

Now onto its structural framing.

Cheers,

Happy Birthday! Your boat stowage frame is well thought out, and the boat looks fantastic.

She coming along great. Congratulations on a fantastic build
Phillip,

Thanks - glad that you are looking at his log. Working on adding more details to ship's boat framing as well as I had mentioned figuring
out the "how to's" for roping the bits to the deck,

Still waiting on my next project to get shipped - I was ordered in August - now shipping, apparently wont be until mid November (but it
has been pushed back already twice - hmmm) I know that things aren't ok in Kiev - so hoping for the best ( 1/32nd Viking from Pavel N.)
NO just checked now shipping - hopefully in December. Hmmm???

So in the meantime I still find things to do with SotSeas

PS: Your Sovereign also looks great - Have you thought of adding a link to your build log?

Thanks for your nice post.

My Sovereign of the Sea is currently on hold till I at least complete the running rigging in my HMS Victory. I’ve got 3 ships I’m working on and about to start a 4th. Enough to keep me busy for a long time.

Even though I have 4 ships to complete. I’m looking for a 5th.

I’m contemplating building one from scratch of plans alone. Source and cut all the timber myself.

Thanks mates,

She's almost done. I may put together a separate log for how I put this one together. I did some looking into Master Korabel they are
still in business, but sadly many vendors will no longer order their products.
Some images.

PS: Watco oil was their "Natural" --- stain was Golden Oak same as for the Sovereign masts

Do you have experience using other brands of Danish oil (for example, Rustins) and have you noticed a difference?
Did you dilute the oil with solvent or use pure oil?

Hi Phillip,

I first look at the length of the dowel looking for some areas of grain definition; then shorten as needed adding the stain from the image below.
The foremast dowl is weak in that regard as is the mizzenmast..But main mast came out much to my liking.
I like the look of the "tree trunk" mast --- helping results look more realistic IMO

Thanks for your interest.....

I’ve almost completed the bowsprit on my Sovereign of the Sea build.

I came up with this look by accident for the mast.

I tried a straight clear varnish over the top and was not happy. So I tried some chocolate walnut stain/varnish and still not happy with the results.

I than sanded the mast down to remove the walnut stain and it left the walnut stain in the grooves of the mast. So I put a satin clear water based varnish over the top and this is the results.

serikoff

No I have no experience with any other oils. And no I did not dilute the oil. I used an ear cotton Qtip and just rolled the oil over the planks - waited a bit and wiped off the wet excess.

For my other two builds, Santísima and Vasa, no oils or any varnish of any kind. Hull and decks have stayed the same over time. The Santa Maria - as mentioned earlier did get a Dark Watco (forgotten which)

Sovereign Pear wood hull and decks will also stay as they are.

I won't add any preservatives to this current project either. THAT SAID - I do plan on adding some sort of oil to the hull of my next project, as well as
detailing the interior hull planks trying to get the look of how they were sealed (oil or stain). I also intend to do some oil/stain work with the deck planks -- All to be determined...

Thanks for you post and question..
