Greeks used lead (Pb) much earlier. I'm guessing the plates are supposed to be lead.

Lead coating has been used in the Spanish galleons of the Carrera de Indias since 1514
These Galleons of this time had really a special appearance - Very good work my friend

Your boat looks great - very good idea to follow the same way of presentation (one half completed, other half only skeleton) like on the ship
